I’m sitting all alone. When my father comes in my bedroom demanded that I try on my dress for the wedding.
“Father I don’t want to marry Ben he is a snob and has no sense of humor.” I complained.
“Dear sweet Andalyn please stop acting like a child you must go through with this weeding for us to have a home and food. You know as well as I do that that if you do not marry Benjamin that our house and all our possessions will be taken from us. We will have nothing left so please Andalyn put aside your thoughts and worries.” My father told me.
“I am a child! Father you can’t really make me go through with this can you?” I asked.
“Yes I can and I will I would be happier if you would learn to like Benjamin or at least tolerate him for me. Please Andalyn.” My father said.
“No he is nothing to me! He is so full of himself and I can’t stand him. I rather marry a human!” I yelled. One of the guests staying in my house for the wedding gasped my father gave me a disapproving look and shook his head.
“I would not stand for it marrying a human!” My father scoffed.
“Father I don’t see why you think there so bad. They don’t hurt us fairies so why should we fear them?” I questioned.
“Naïve Andalyn do you not remember what those humans did to us? They dared to set foot on our land to purposely cross the lines of our two kinds. It was forbbien since then we fairies have never been the same we live in fear of those humans.” My father reminded me.
“Father I refuse to go through with this wedding you can’t make me no matter what you say. Let Ben burn our home and take our stuff at least we will still have our pride.” I said. For a moment there was an award silence again. My father let what I said hang there in the air between us. My father didn’t turn a red or even show and signs of madness he only calmly mumbled.
“You will go through with this wedding weather you like it or not Andalyn. Get in your dress your dress we need to be fitted properly.” My father left the room slamming the door shut. I sat there in my room pouting. One of the maids Ben had hired knocked on my door and quickly came in.
“Miss Andalyn why aren’t you trying on your wedding dress? Oh and I have been told to give you this.” The maid inquired. She handed me a heart shaped box of chocolate candies. There was a card attached to it.
Sweets for my sweet
You are brighter than the sun
Every time you walk into a room your beauty illuminates it
And you are the one
Sighed by Ben. The note made me want to gag. It was so mushy and heart warm felt. I’m sure some girls would have died to get a note like this from a handsome, young, rich guy who absolutely adored them. To me it was sickening especially to think of Ben staying up one night writing this little love note to me searching for the right words in his hand felt leather pocket dictionary. I couldn’t have been more repulsed then I was now. Utterly despicable, unheard of, and certainly un-called for. Maybe Ben didn’t get the message I was sending him I don’t know how he could of missed it through.
I ignored all of his questions and when he asked if I liked a certain food he like the answer would always be “Ughh don’t even bring up the name of that food every time I heard the name of it I gag.” Surly that had to be a turn off. When that didn’t work I switched to mean, pushy, bossy, angry, and then happy, clingy, needy, emotional to give that both whiplash and nothing had worked. It would be nearly impossible to get him to stop liking me so I would restore to my last option.
“Because there isn’t going to be a wedding.” I grumbled annoyed by her question. Surely she heard my father all the maids that were hired by Ben had had their ears pressed against my door all day long what would make her any different?
“Oh and why is that? Andalyn I’m sure your mother would want her wedding to be as grand as yours could be. Ben has hired personal designer and the roses oh how they smell so sweet and the doves.” The maid smiled.
“I don’t like Ben I think he is a snob with no sense of humor.” I confided. It felt good to get that off my chest rather than to complain about it.
“Oh Miss Andalyn I to once was offered married and I was just like you when I was young stubborn, had a good sense of humor, a good head on my shoulders, and most importantly I would try to put myself first no matter whatever people thought of me. And now I stand before you as a simple maid before I could have a lot to look forward to. People say I was a fool for turning down married to the richest man in all of town and yet no matter what people say I still think my judgment was and is better than theirs. For you see Andalyn I didn’t want to marry the man for the wrong reasons I wanted to marry him out of love and he didn’t love me. He only thought of me as a beautiful face other trophies to be mounted on his wall and that’s why I said no. I wanted him to love me for me not because I’m am or was pretty so I think you should go with your best judgement listen to your heart and it will lead you down the right path. Now if you are still willing to try that dress on for your father’s sake I’m happily fix it for you so it is your size.” The maid explained.
“What is your name all this time you have been here and I don’t know your name?” I grinned.
“Lidia.” Lidia softly said.
“Ok then Lidia I think I will try that dress on.” I added.
“Yes Miss Andalyn.” Lidia went off and fetched the dress from the closet. I went into the bathroom to try it on. I turned the door knob and opened the door to my bedroom Lidia was sitting down reading a magazine. She looked at me and put the magazine she was reading down.
“My Miss Andalyn you look lovely. Of course you are a lot more than just pretty. Although may I suggest some alterations to the dress?” Lidia murmured.
“Yes I would go ahead.” I approved. I looked in the mirror the dress looked like some type of sweat ware on my frame. I wasn’t one of the smallest fairies but close to it. Over the last few months I had lost wait due to the stress of this wedding. All the planning and the adjustments that needed to be made to everything were getting out of hand. My mother had gone to Italy to look for the perfect vial and flowers for me to hold. She still hadn’t returned yet calling and saying she was close to finding the perfect one. I am going to throw everyone’s work away only for my own selfish reasons. I’m no better than Ben if I do that. No you are better than him thinking Andalyn do you want to spend forever with your new hubby? Huh was that me? I looked in the mirror my green eyes had seemed to appear duller to me something was wrong I had bright green eyes. Nothing I read in the fairies books or health medical books had talked about the eyes dulling. That’s because I’m behide those eyes now not you. Excuse me? You heard me.
I knew that voice I had heard it before somewhere why did I hear it now in my own head? You’re not real you’re a figment of my imagination that’s what you are. No I’m not I’m you. The voice hissed at me.
“Lidia do my eyes look duller to you?” I question helpless feeling like something was very wrong with me.
“No there as bright as always.” Lidia reassured. “Now hold still well I fix this dress. I held perfectly still as Lidia fixed the dress so it would fit my thin frame perfectly. Get out of my head! Never.
Lanell! Traitor! I accused. Am not I just like to have a little fun on like some people. Lanell was a dark fairy she always loved to cause chaos. Although sometimes she does it in ways you wouldn’t expect like mind control.
Get out of my head! I commanded. And why should I what gives you the right to tell me what to do? You’re in my head aren’t you? Yes what of it? Lanell returned with a question.
You said you didn’t want to marry Benjamin and so I will not let you marry him for you see little Andalyn I am friend not foe. I can save you from the mistake of marrying that fool with no sense of humor do you want that or not be warned once you say no I will not return to help you, you will be doomed with Ben for the rest of your sad life. I hesitated for a moment. I am no wait yes wait no um fine. Good now here is the deal I find you a human boy and you pretend to like him with you missing from this town those ignorance fools will never think to look within the mortals you shall concealed yourself within them and it will be our little secret. Ok.
Good now one more thing you know what it isn’t important I’ll tell you later. I could feel my body shaking and then somehow I was looking at my body talking to Lidia. That liar she never said she would get full control of my body this isn’t fair.
“Lanell.” I tapped her lightly on the shoulder I felt like killing that lair. She was going to destroy me and my family. “Now it’s personal.” I blurted out. They didn’t seem to notice me. “Lidia!” I almost yelled it was no use she didn’t hear me. All of a sudden I could feel myself being pulled into the darkness and then laughter surrounding me.
“Hello Andlyn.” A fairy maybe one more year younger than me giggled.
“Hello how do you know my name?” I asked.
“Everyone knows your name come watch the movie with me. It is a fabulous one too.” She urged. The little girl showed me a big screen and there Lanell was talking to Lidia.
“Lanell!” I growled.
Isn’t she a wonderful actress?” I was too busy watching the screen to pay any attention to the girl who stood beside me. She wasn’t a threat so why should I care about her?
“Okay Miss Andalyn I have fixed your dress and might I say it looks wonderful on your figure.” Lidia chirped.
“Admiring my figure are you? I bet you wish you had it instead of your figure.” Lanell sniped. Lidia had the average figure she wasn’t too thin yet not too big. She maintained the right weight and eats very healthy.
“No Miss Andalyn I was only complimenting you. Trying to assure you that you look lovely.” Lidia whispered.
“No I looked fabulous now fetch me some sparkling water from the fridge now Lidy!” Lnell demanded.
“Right away Miss Andalyn.” Lidia ran out of the room and came back with some sparkling water. “Here is you sparkling water Miss Andalyn.” Lidia handed the water to Lanell.
“No no no! This won’t due at all this is chilled I said I wanted room temperature! Now go or lose your job!” Lanell shirked.
“You didn’t say anything about temperature Miss Andalyn.” Lidia augured.
“Yes I did now go!” Lanell commanded. Lidia came back with the water. “That will be all Liny dismissed.” Lidia stomped out of the room and then my father came in.
“Andalyn you look beautiful.” My father picked Lanell up and sprung her around the room.
“Whatever put me down now and leave.” Lanell sneered. My father didn’t say a word but mealy left. That night Lanell snuck out and found a human whom was lost on a nature hike.
“Hello do you know how to get out of here?” He asked Lanell.
“Why yes I do follow me.” Lanell showed him the way out. I was sick of watching this so I turned the screen off.
“Make me myself again I want my body back and hurry up!” I demanded.
“No can do.” The girl replied.
“Now or else. Don’t ask or what because you really don’t want to find out.” I jeered. The girl nodded her head and turned me back into myself. I found the human boy walking away from me waving his hand at me without looking back.
“Wait I called.” I tried to think of an excuse any excuse getting him to stay with me longer. “Can you walk me home it’s getting dark out and I don’t know if I can find my way home alone in the darkness.” I muttered.
“Yea sure Andalyn ok show me where you live.” I had told the mortal the instructions to my house and so far he was proving useful to help me get home. When it really did get dark out I decided to hold onto his shirt sleeve because without it I couldn’t see much of anything. Fairies are almost blind at night if a fairy walked into the middle of the road and a car was coming at him or her she might get run over unless she is looking at the headlights of the car. When we arrived to my house I asked for the boy’s name once more claiming I forgot it.
“Its Luke well I have to hurrying up and get home my little brother will be worried about me. It was nice meeting you but he is probably really hungry right now and I don’t want to keep him waiting any longer. Bye.” Luke waved as I saw his shadow run off into the night. I stumbled upon my bedroom window and fell in landing on the floor. I crawled in to my bed and went to sleep thinking of nice all the disappointed faces I would see if I didn’t married Ben.
The morning air had a nice breeze to it and the sun was shining just right. I snuck out of the house going to the forest finding Luke there.
“Hi.” I mumbled to him.
“Hi.” He greeted.
“I’m sorry about last night I mean you getting home late and stuff.” I apologized.
“It’s okay my brother found some food in the fridge and he was happy. So how have you been?” Luke added.
“Okay and you?” I questioned in return.
“Okay not much so you guessed I would be here again. Good job.” I wasn’t sure if it was a questioned or a statement so I decided to nod my head.
“I’m not sure how I even remember to get him. Yesterday I kind of went here on a whim and I guess somehow I just happen to remember. Its nice here peaceful. Do you come here often?” I smiled.
“Yes almost every day. Yea I love how it’s so peaceful this forest id one of the few that hasn’t been turned into an amusement park like most of them. It’s a shame really how we abuse nature for our own personal use. Like bees for honey I was feeling when every I see a container of honey like we stole that from them. I feel the same way with milk and such. Oh and don’t even get me started on meat. Anyway I’m a vegetarian so I don’t have to worry about those things.” Luke explained.
“Oh I guess I’m a vegetarian I never had meat before so does that make me one?” I inquired.
“I guess.” Luke shrugged his shoulders.
“And about last night I only held onto your arm because I’m almost blind in the dark so if that made you uncomfortable or anything I’m…: Luke stopped me right there.
“It’ okay there’s no need to apologize.” Luke assured.
“Ok then I better get going I have to get ready for my…” I stopped myself. “My uncle birthday.” I lied.
“Okay bye see ya tomorrow?” Luke brought up.
“Okay sure bye. Wait you know how to get out of here right or should I show you again?” I answered.
“No I can manage bye.” I walked out of the forest taking my time to get home. I didn’t want to get home right away then that would mean dealing with my dad and everyone else. When I finally made it home going through my bedroom window I was caught my Lidia.
“Miss Andalyn you have leaves and twigs in your hair where have you been?” Lidia stood there in front of me. I looked at her she looked so pure like she had never been told a like before. I gulped and swallowed hard. Choking on my breath I managed to blurt out.
“A walk.” Lidia walked over to me and patted me as if to stop my choking and it worked. I had told Lidia half the truth then why did I feel so bad?
In the next seven months my mother was back from Italy with the “perfect vial and flowers. I had a look of guilt, and despondency on my face that I couldn’t seem to wash away. My mom said she wanted to have a vacation. And as to why the wedding was taking so long it was because my parents wanted me and Ben to know everything about each other. He had learned every little detail about me even the tiniest thing like what king of toothpaste do I use. It was starting to creep me out while I had learned nothing new about him and I mean NOTHING.
“It is so you dear, it has that effervescent mixed in there to. It think it’s wonderful don’t you darling?” My mother sang. I couldn’t lie to her I didn’t dare open my mouth I only shook my head. I did like it so why was I thinking this was a lie. Maybe it was because I had lied to Lidia the one person I had been telling almost every lately. I went out for a “walk” secretly going to the forest. Luke and I had become better friends now so when he unexpectly kissed me I was shocked.
“Luke wait. I’m a fairy and I’m getting married in a month.” I truthfully told.
“Yea and I’m a wizard who has never seen anyone prettier than you.” He joked.
“NO I’m serious Luke this is no joke and you think I’m pretty?” I blushed getting side track when Luke commented me was just part of the whole I think I really might love you thing.
“Yes vey pretty.” I flushed a bright red normally I didn’t like people to shower or even sprinkle me with compliments but now it felt nice.
“Ok well then no I’m a fairy. You have to listen to me.” I made my wings visible for Luke to see.
“Oh you weren’t joking you are a fairy. Well that’s ok.” Luke moved closer to me pulling me in his arms.
“NO I’m getting MARRIED and I don’t know what to do. Truth be told I um at first I used you I guess to get my mind off this wedding and maybe to stop it. Because I don’t want to marry and I hate the guy I’m getting married to.” I blurted out I couldn’t stop myself.
“You used me?!” Luke got up and looked down at me.
“Yes but I really do lov…” Luke cut me off.
“I don’t want to hear it. I have to go.” Luke started to wall out of the forest. I let him go I was horrible person. I deserved this it was my punishment for lying to everyone. I didn’t balm Luke for doing that if he told me that I would get angry told. I walked home in the blinding darkness right now I didn’t care if I got hit by a car or not.
Let the car hit me go ahead let them dare try to hurt me. A truck did hit me luckily I only had a few starches my immortally deal had almost been sealed so what did it mattered if I died I could run home and make them make me immortal quickly. I did run home having enough sense of direction to make it there. When I came in the door I was holding on to my side it was bleeding and I’m sure my mother wouldn’t be happy if I got blood on the carpet.
“Andalyn you’re bleeding. Lidia get a towel. Honey let go of your side.” My mom instructed.
“Then your carpet will get blood on it.” I protested.
“I don’t care about my carpet I care about you.” My mom hugged me. Lidia came back with a towel and some fairy healing medicine. I let go of my side and Lidia applied the medicine and a ban aid and towel. Fairies injuries were normally much more minor than a human’s would be but sometimes still just as fatal. This was not fatal. That night I told Lidia all about Luke and everything. Lidia told me to go to the forest and there he was my human knight in shining armor.
“Luke!” I exclaimed. I ran up to him and wrapped my arms around his neck. Luke put his hangs on my waist.
“I forgive you.” I looked back at him with tears in my eyes.
“Thank you.” I whisper. I flew home only to see my father there Lidia hadn’t told had she not my mother had figured out by the way I was acting.
“Honey we’ve decided you don’t have to marry Ben. Turns out Lidia has as much power as his father does. Lidia was a lawyer and she still remembers every detail of our law like it was yesterday.
“So you may do what you want with the human boy.” My mom grinned. I hugged her and ran to Luke’s house. Luke had come out of his house and got down on one knee.
“Will you marry me?” He asked holding a black box. I tossed my arms around him and the next months we spent planning our wedding day. We were married in Vegas and adopted three children.
