‘I’ll come back,’

You said

‘I promise,

I’ll come back for you.’

But before you could,

the string was cut.

Your ribbon of life abruptly ripping,

leaving jagged threads

At the ends.

Threads that ensnared my heart,

pulling harshly

and preventing it from beating,

preventing me from thinking.

Reality is harsh.

What do you see?

Blank stares, a silent room, people in black…

No one even dares to cry aloud.

The silence suffocates.

I don’t know what to think,

I can’t say that I knew…

Knew that your promise

would fall through.

Inside, we all could see

See that you wouldn’t be coming back

‘You can’t leave.’,

we thought then

‘You shouldn’t have left.’

we think now.

Either way,

we each die a little

knowing we could have saved you,

If we just told you to stay.

To not go.

To not promise.

To not leave.

To not die.

I promise now, rather than you,

I will come to you.

‘I promise,’ I say

‘I will come back to you.’
