The Plastic Waste Dilema

Image result for plastic waste

How many times a day do you actually see a person recycle a bottle instead of just throwing it away in the nearest trash bin. Many people believe that plastics and the recycling of plastics is a process that is being improved upon everyday, But in reality we need to do more and more to undo the harm that our plastic waste has already caused upon the globe. Everyday more and more is wasted and until we implement better ways of exposing and recycling plastics we will keep increasing the detriment we have already created.

In recent years the plastic waste has escalated to the point of detrimental levels whether it be on the shore of beaches in seas or in the landfills that we dump it into. We need to make more of an effort to take steps to prevent the plastic waste from getting into the landfills and oceans by implementing better recycling methods and increasing measures to prevent the waste from reaching these locations. In the article A Whopping 91% of Plastic is not Recycled by Laura Parker it states that “Mass production of plastics, which began just six decades ago, has accelerated so rapidly that it has created 8.3 billion metric tons”. 7.31 of these tons will just sit in landfill and rot away instead of being recycled. A step we need to take to prevent the detriment of plastic waste is to put more effort into recycling your plastics instead of just throwing them away.

While some plastics is recycled we need to do more to decrease the plastics that are already inside the landfills. The plastics being add to landfills will sit there for life times as most plastics take nearly 400 years if not more to degrade. So while we keep piling more and more plastics into landfill we need to have more scientist researching and developing new ways to get rid of and recycle plastics that will keep up with the enormous amount that we are producing and throwing away.

There are several things that we can to do on our ends to stop plastics pollutions. One way of helping to reduce this dire situation is to reduce your use of single use plastics. Instead of buying a pack of water bottle buy a canteen or flask that you can refill. When you go shopping don’t use plastic bags instead use paper or a reusable tote bag. If you are eating instead of using plastic throw away utensils you should instead buy reusable stainless utensils.

Another way we may be able to help out is to spread the word. You can do this through holding meetings, or making websites, or maybe writing essays. This is what will make the largest impact overall. Any steps you can take to spread the message would help to reduce the impact of plastic waste. It is entirely necessary to get the word out there or else it won’t have any actions taken against it.

Plastic waste is not a necessary part of the plastic economy. To help reduce this waste we need to cut use of single use plastics and we need to spread the word about the plastic dilema. Please go out and inform others about this subject.
