with my eyes closed today.
just now, actually.
i was driving down montwood, in space.
(as i’ve been all day)
listening to the most hypnotizing of sounds coming from the radio
and it came to me.
soft and slow it dawned on me that i should close my eyes while going 45 miles per hour.

and so i did.

with my left hand loosely gripping the bottom of the steering wheel,
and a cigarette delecatley pressed between the index and middle finger of my right hand,
i shut my eyes without a second thought.

and all at once

a million thoughs rushed into my head
i thought about the motion that i’m so recklessly trusting myself with,
i thought about the other drivers,
would someone glance over in my direction and see that the seventeen year old driver of the grey nissan next to them has his eyes closed?
would they think i had fallen asleep at the wheel?
would they honk to wake me up?
would they feel unsafe driving next to me?
would they understand that i have no reason for doing this
that i simply had the thought to close my eyes while driving, and so i did?

of course not.

no one would understand.
no one would take the time to try.
no one would listen if i tried explaining.
and i wouldn’t waste my time trying to explain.
