Avoid Eye Contact

Just by staring in someone's eyes,
It can tell you so much about that person.
The pain they've suffered,
Can be instantly visible, without even speaking a word.

The quiver of the eye,
The watering of it as if you are suddenly exposed,
Leaves you feeling so vulnerable,
Until you manage to avoid it all together.

You can feel the eyes of the whole carriage watching you,
Or maybe it's just paranoia, your mind up to its usual tricks,
You feel safe when you just concentrate on your paper,
Till you look up and the eyes of strangers piercing through yours...

Avoiding eye contact is the best solution,
It doesn't encourage conversation with strangers,
And confrontation as a result never occurs,
Even if the weirdo in the corner has been examining your every last detail.

People will say it just shows you are not a confident person,
However, mine is not a confidence issue, of this I'm sure,
I just choose not to make eye contact on purpose,
This way the door to my soul keeps firmly safe and shut.

You catch a glimpse of a cute, attractive girl,
Staring at you between intervals, hoping you look up,
Hoping to capture a moment, to make them smile on the inside,
But you never give them the satisfaction, not even acknowledging their presence.

You wonder why else you don't make regular eye contact,
Is it insecurities, what exactly are you afraid of?
You remain silent, merely absorbing the thought,
And then you just close your eyes, discarding the whole thought in the process.
