The thick black smoke billowed from deep round craters, recently formed in the wet marsh land. Scattered corpses smoldered slightly, and scarlet blood seeped from them, glinting menacingly in the moonlight. Huge clear drops silently hit the floor of this colossal waste land, washing away the blood, clearing away the death; no one would fight here for a long time. Tiny movements came from places, sodden rats emerged from holes in the ground, gnawing at decaying flesh and squeaking incessantly. The rain intensified, till only the soft patter and splashing could be heard, a rhythmic drumming; time had no meaning here. The dark sky changed, slowly fading from black, the huge edges of a canvas lightening into grays and whites, with nuances of pink; the sun was gradually growing, bursting from under the ground, as the light echoed all around; highlighting its destruction.
