Our assignment was to dissent against an idea that was commonly accepted

Speech of Dissent

To knowingly conform is to starve yourself of humanity. Conformity may be a sub-conscious action of self-preservation for some, whilst universal ideas are reassuring for others who are happy to bask in the light of its shared state of social negligence. For those who join me today, I can safely say that neither of these is the case. The irony in which we gather as a group to celebrate our collective individuality is heartening and I am pleased we can share our passions. It is not in rebellion that we gather here today. This is not some attempt to stand against the masses in any self-centered desire to be different for the sake of being different, but a chance for us to educate society in an idea that is relevant today of all days. As the sun beams down evaporating the remnants of this seemingly meager Pittsburgh Winter, society rejoices at the swift departure of the rain, the snow and the sleet, each one met with unnecessary negativity. Statistics show that 6% of people in the United State suffer from seasonal affective disorder with it being a shared understanding that any form of precipitation causes stress and anxiety amongst many. But for what reason? Surely we have more important things in our lives to worry about more than that which we cannot control, never mind that which is necessary. The poetic dancing of rain drops orchestrating themselves majestically off of every surface is not something we should meet with animosity. Anything that enlightens our senses is a gift: the smell, the sounds, the refreshing feeling as a bead of water trickles down your face is a beauty that takes no artistic expertise, only an open mind. I can fully relate to the morning dash to class seeming less appealing as the heavens are opened but we can make simple provisions for that. Failing to prepare is preparing to fail. Starting the day assuming negativity is bound to end in your assumptions being granted. Embrace the elements and let them wash away the negative social connotations they hold as your mind is freed of baggage. As we gather here today, agents of peace looking to promote an idea against a feeling that is heavily engraved into our society, an idea that causes tension between work mates, brings peoples tolerance levels to a dramatic low and in turn leads to other social strains, we ask you to reflect on your views and accentuate the positives. Sit on your front porch with a friend and watch the rain dance. Embrace your partner passionately as you bask in a shared sense of rejuvenation underneath a downpour of romantic ecstasy. Find a new belief from nature’s beautiful way of cleansing the Earth and clearing the air. If that doesn’t work, you can at least be mindful of the fact that, regardless of how torrential, things can only get better from here…
