The Best Christmas gift

I woke up at 8:00 am in the morning and stood in front of the mirror. I’m very happy today. Finally my dream is coming true. Yesterday Mrs. Shore the owner of New York’s best magazine asked me to write a story for the romance section of the magazine. I’ve always wanted to work with her and now I can. But I have to write a realistic romantic story and I’ve never done that. I’m more of a fiction and fantasy writer. I looked into the mirror  at my reflection.

“I am Mia Jones. I can do anything,” I said to myself.

But where will I find a realistic romantic story that readers would like. And just like that, a name struck my mind- Rayne Smith. He will definitely help me. I’ve read his poems and from that I can say he has definitely been in love and what’s better then the love story of a poet. I dialed the number immediately.

“Hello,” he said in a sleepy voice.

“Rayne, I need to see you right now.”

“Fine I’m home and you can come.”

“I’ll be there in five minutes.”

I took my car keys and started driving to his house. Rayne and I met in a formal gathering. I’m a fan of poetry and at that time he was awarded as the best poet and he deserved it. His poems were piece of pure excellence but in his every poem, there was a “she”. A mystery girl that was his inspiration and now I want to know about her. I reached there and rang the doorbell. It is weird that we became buddies after that and now we share almost everything.

“Heya, what brings you here, so early?”

“You won’t believe what happened.”

“What?”

“Mrs. Shore asked me write for his magazine.”

“Oh wow! You’re so lucky. That’s was your dream girl.”

“Yes, and now I need your help.”

“Sure, first come in.”

We both settled on the couch with a cup of coffee.

“So, how can I help you?”

“She asked me to write a realistic love story so I thought maybe you can tell me about her and I can write about it.” I could tell from his face that he understood whom I was talking about.

“Fine, I knew one day you’ll ask me but I don’t think our love story is something readers would like.”

“Why do you say so?”

“I’ll just tell you the story and you’ll know yourself.”

I picked up the pen and started writing.

 ************

It was month of December and I was in Paris. My career was going really low as you know I didn’t know what to write about anymore. So I thought of taking a break and went to Paris to find my inspiration. I was sitting in the park looking around me when my eyes rested on her. I admired her brown hair blowing with the wind and her blue eyes deeper then the deepest ocean. Her smile that could make a rock melt and in that mere second I knew that she was “my inspiration for life.” I went to her but I didn’t know what to say.

“Hello,” I said to her.

“Oh My God, R- Rayne smith. I am a big fan of yours. I just love your poems,” she said. Wow her voice was like honey, maybe even sweeter.

“I’m glad you like it.”

“I’m Jessica Thompson,” she said shaking my hand.

“I was wondering if you’ll help me explore Paris. This s the first time I’m here………”

“Oh yes yes of course.” She took me to many beautiful places and we talked to each other a lot. I let my heart open to her. My every secret, everything that had ever happened to me was now shared with her. She told me about herself but I barely listened, I only looked at her admiring her beauty. It was almost midnight when we finally went to Eiffel tower.

I looked into her eyes and moved closer. She closed her eyes and then we kissed. In that kiss I knew that she was the one who had scribed my heart with love letters. Her touch made me want to melt into her skin. She shone like a son; she was my own personal sunshine. It was a full moon night and we laid there under the stars, holding each other’s hand. I didn’t even realize when we both fell asleep there on the bench and when morning came. This was the first time I considered the sunrise as the most beautiful scene in the world. When she woke up, we both stared at each other for I don’t remember how long. Then I broke the silence between us.

“Last night was the best night of my existence.”

“This is not right,” she said. She seemed worried.

“I love you, Jessica.”

“But I’m engaged,” she said and my heart was broken into a million pieces and every piece was screaming that this is not true.

She got up and walked away and I did nothing. I should’ve stopped her but there was something inside me that was aching very badly. I sat on the bench till afternoon thinking about the time I spent with her. She was my soul mate, my true love and she just left me. Then I got up, took a flight and came back to New York. I never forgot her but I didn’t try to reach her either. I’m sure she would be happily married by now.

“Oh! I’m sorry Rayne. I didn’t know about it or I would’ve never asked you.”

“It’s fine Mia. I am sorry that I couldn’t help you with the story,” I said.

She just got up and went away.

1 Month later.

I was relaxing on the couch watching TV when the doorbell rang. I answered the door and saw Mia standing outside.

“Merry Christmas Rayne,” she said. Oh I didn’t remember, it was Christmas today.

“Same to you,”

“Merry Christmas,” one more voice said and I recognized it easily. It was her voice, my love. She was hiding behind Mia and then came in front of me.

I was rendered speechless. I was seeing her after such a long time and she hadn’t changed a bit. Her twinkling eyes still had the same passion in them. Her smile could still make my heart come out of my chest.

“Is this a dream? If it is then I don’t wanna wake up.”

“It’s not a dream and I’ll tell you everything once we get in,” said Mia. We all sat on the couch and I couldn’t take my eyes off Jessica. I felt like I was watching her for like hours.

“Now tell me how did you find her?”

“It was very easy you know because I’m Santa Claus,” she said jokingly.

“Come on now, just tell me.”

“When you said the name Jessica Thompson, I was immediately reminded of her. My brother was gonna get married with her but she refused at the last moment and THAT could not be a co-incident. So I tracked her down and when I told her about you I saw the same look in her eyes that I saw in yours. So, here she is, your Christmas gift.”

“This is the best Christmas ever and you’re the best Santa,” I said.

“Of course. Now I got your part of the story now I wanna listen to what she has to say,” said Mia.

“Sure,” said Jessica and now I’m excited to know what she has to say.

“I’m sure he must have filled you in with the details about Paris so I should tell you what happened later on,” she said.

Jessica’s POV

“That night with him was really the best time I’ve ever had. All my problems, worries just vanished but I knew that what I was doing was wrong. As you know I was engaged with your brother. So I thought maybe the best thing to do was going away and get over it but NO.”

I went home and lay on my bed thinking of my future when I’ll get married but my every thought was disturbed with his memory. In a few weeks I almost managed to get him out of my mind but when I read his poem “The Girl with heavenly smile,” I just couldn’t control myself. I was crying so hard when my mom came in and I told her everything. She was the one who supported me through it. She told me to follow my heart.

“And then you broke the engagement, but why didn’t you come to me?” asked Rayne. His voice is still the same, it seems like music to my ear.

“You know how difficult it was for me. You were a poet but still no one knew a thing about you. I didn’t know where you lived, your phone number or if you had gotten married,” I said. I was really angry with him. All these years I have tried so hard to search him but he thinks that I didn’t even try.

“I checked on the internet and found the address of your house in San Francisco and I went there but no sign of you,” I told him.

“I’m sorry. After that day, I just couldn’t be back into that life. I just wrote and sent my stuff to the publishers. I didn’t want to come in front of the media.”

“And then how do you expect me to track you down. Thank god for Mia that she found me and brought me here.”

“That was because I told her everything,” he said.

“Come on guys, stop fighting. You saw each other after such a long time and you’re fighting. That’s not so romantic,” said Mia and we both smiled.

****

I got up and kissed Jessica softly. It felt like heaven touching her lips after such a long time. Our lips began dancing together. Then I heard Mia and broke our kiss.

“Wait, before you start doing that again, I have another gift for you.”

“I don’t think you can give me any better gift than this,” I said kissing Jess again.

“Oh I’m sure you WILL like it.”

“What’s it?”

She gave an envelope to me and when I opened it I saw two flight tickets to Paris.

“I want you two to go back there and re-live that moment. Also I have booked a room in Paris’ best hotel,” she said with a smile.

“Oh my god! I don’t know how I can repay you Mia,” I said. She is literally the best friend ever. I don’t know why she’s doing it.

“No need for that. I just feel so good by bringing two love birds together. Moreover you already repaid me by giving me the best love story ever.”

“Why are you doing this?”

“Well I needed a happy ending for my story so I thought, why not create one? Now go pack your bags fast, you’re going back to Paris.”

And that day is just unforgettable for me because on that day, I found the best Christmas gift ever. I found my love…………
