Sierra was always a strange girl. Ever since I adopted her, she acted a little bit crazy. It was normal for a child her age to have an imaginary friend, but not five years later when she was ten. His name was Ben. Sierra spoke to him all the time, but I could never see him. She was sent to a mental hospital when I took her to the shop with me and people started to notice that she was talking to someone that wasn't visible. I remember the day they took her from me. They charged right at her and put her in the back of their van and drove her away to the hospital.
It was her birthday, she was turning sixteen. I was planning on visiting her. I had only visited her once when she was eleven. We were sitting at a table in the visiting room. We were having a completely normal conversation until 'Ben' ruined everything. She started muttering to whoever was there,
"No. I'm not doing it. You can't make me. Stop it! Stop!!" She was screaming and kicking her legs around. It wasn't long until six men came in and put her in a straight jacket. They dragged her away out of the room and that was the last time I ever saw her.
I got a train to go see her. I had a birthday card for her in my handbag. While on the train, I kept checking to see if the card was still there. I was quite nervous. When I got there, the doors seemed much bigger than they were before. I had no idea what to expect when I saw her. I pressed the button on the wall to open the doors and walked up to the receptionist. She was a nice lady with long black hair and deep blue eyes. I told her who I was seeing and a nurse took me to Sierra's room. My heartbeat was increasing as we got closer to the door. The nurse took out a key from her pocket and unlocked the door. When I walked in, I couldn't see Sierra anywhere. As I walked in, I noticed a pale girl in a white dressing gown underneath the bed. She crawled out and stood up. I handed her the card and read out what I had written as she couldn't read or write because of a learning disability she had. I was about to sit down on the chair in front of her but before I could do anything she quickly said,
"Don't sit there! Ben's sitting there." I didn't want to upset her so I sat on the bed next to her and the first thing she said was, "Why are you here? You never visited before on my birthday." I found it hard to answer her question so I just replied with a sigh. Suddenly, breaking the silence, Sierra started screaming,
"No!! Ben!! Don't leave me!! BEN!!!" She was kicking around, just like before when I visited her. A few people came in and tried to calm her down. I had to leave, I couldn't stand seeing Sierra the way she was. I quickly walked out of the building and got a train back home. Just then I felt someone tap my shoulder. I turned around and to my surprise, it was Sierra. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I closed my eyes for a few seconds hoping that she wouldn't be there when I opened them but it was real. Sierra had actually followed me onto the train. After a few seconds of just staring at her she said,
"A mother should have a daughter." When we got back home I introduced her to my boyfriend, Isaac and her brother, Jesse. She was furious when she saw Jesse. She gave me a dirty look and said,
"Did you completely forget about me? Did you replace me with him?" I sighed and showed her to her room. It still had all of her old toys and her pictures. She stayed there until I made dinner for her. She refused to speak to anyone, including Ben.
