When I was five

And she was eight

We would sit in the street

And sing songs

And make up stories

And eat sweets

When I was eight

And she was eleven

We would sit in the street

And sing songs

And share stories

And she would eat a few sweets

And I would eat the rest

When I was eleven

And she was fourteen

She would sit in her room

And me in mine

And little did I sing

And no stories were told

And I would eat my sweets

And she, she would eat nothing

When I was fourteen

And she would have been seventeen

I would sit in my room

And it would be silent

And no words were spoken

And no sweets were eaten

When I was seventeen

And she would have been twenty

I would sit in my hospital bed

No energy to sing

And no stories to tell

And no food was eaten

When I would have been 21

She would have been 24
