I’m sad for the children whose dreams have been burst

By a maniac’s cold fury and our own inaction.

What started as a midnight summer’s treat

Turned evil, twisted and scary by a madman’s rage.

Who can answer for this outrage?

Where can the children turn

To get their dreams back from the void

Created in that monster’s head?

Feelings of helplessness consume

What little is left after empathy drains.

The very soul shaken by nonsense

Of a child in costume running scared, confused.

Take comfort, superhero, where you can

And dream your dreams again in safety,

For the world needs your hope right now

To save it from its apathy.
