My neighbor and his naughty goat.

By M.Ali

I do not even know how to start this story. Is it funny or sad? –It is difficult for me to answer. Anyway I decided to share this real story with you and let you think over it. Some years ago I used to live in the suburb of Baku where you could not find high buildings but only one or two floor houses. I liked my neighborhood there. Because I was surrounded with village style modest and hardworking people who could always warm your heart with nice stories of life. My family members and I had very good relationship with all the neighbors, but the family leaving opposite us was special one for us. They moved to that place after us, but as soon as they started to live there we built good relationship. We used to spend the evenings together around the tea table talking and joking till the bed time. In winter we visited each other and had fun together. We still have warm relation with that family even though we are not neighbors any more. The head of the family is Akif who has been my friend for years now. Before writing this story I asked his permission and told him that I would not make any changes to the real story. To tell the truth he was not against my writing, but told me that it was useless to write a story like this. I did not listen to him, got his permission and did not discuss my story writing plan with anyone……..The story took place on a saint Kurban Holiday…. We would have 3 day offs on Kurban Holiday. I had to buy sheep to sacrifice. Some days before the holiday I was discussing this topic with Akif and he told me that he would order goat for himself from his friend in the region. He asked me whether I also wanted to order one. As a typical Azeri guy I asked him about the health of animals over there. He assured me that animals were healthy and at reasonable price. So I ordered a sheep and Akif ordered a goat. Animals were delivered on the eve of Kurban Holiday. We tied them to the gas pipe passing along our fence. The animals stayed over there till the morning. The person to slaughter the animals was Akif as he had grown up in the region. Everyone in my family and neighborhood was very happy on the day of Kurban. It was sunny outside and the children were playing outside as if celebrating their being on holiday for three days. I had my breakfast and then went out to call Akif. I opened the yard door and saw Akif bending over my vehicle and smoking. We greeted each other and discussed the right time to slaughter the animals. We decided to slaughter them before 12 am in order to have enough time to share parts with neighbors and relatives.  So I offered to slaughter my sheep first because I had to take some part of it to other part of the city. Akif agreed and we took the sheep to our yard. We would slaughter and hang the sheep from pull up bar that I had inside my yard. Akif took the knife and prayed…..the sheep was slaughtered. We started to clean the parts of the sheep when Akif’s younger son rushed into the yard and screamed out that the goat was not there. We ran out to the street and saw no goat there……What a disappointment!!! We started to search for it. We ran in different directions with the hope to find the goat. Our houses were at the highest point of the settlement, so below lay the houses, above high hills and deserted area. I went in the direction of hills together with my son and Akif went down to the settlement. I searched the area, climbed the hills, ran like crazy but could not see anything like goat…..I came back home took my vehicle and went to the main road…..I went there in order to be sure that search was completely carried out. I returned home in two hours….. Akif was sitting on a bench in front of his house smoking heavily……we talked a little bit….he tried to show that he did not care about the goat but I knew that it was not like that….That day was spoilt. I was very sad. Akif was poor one and it was the first time in his life that he had bought animal to sacrifice. I had seen the excitement in his eyes when told me about this some days before the holiday. And now the goat was gone, we could not find it…..One more issue which was ruining me inside was his slaughtering my sheep first. If I had not  asked him to slaughter my sheep first, his goat would not have disappeared. I was blaming myself….I smoked more than ten cigarettes during an hour. Akif did not look sad. He said it was destiny and you could do nothing with it. But he was suffering deep inside his heart. I went up to him and gave him a large hug. We looked at each other and smiled……I continued the search of the goat even for some days after this event but with no success…. This story happened several years ago. We and our families are still friends. But every time I am reminded of this story when I see Akif and feel sorry. I did not want his first saint deed for God to fail…….Any way we could not do anything about it….
