Part 3

“It happened too quickly for you to remember immediately.  Upon reflection it will come back to you.  The event did happen, and you will remember.  You’ll remember because you’re fortunate enough to be able to wake up after it.  Many aren’t so lucky, many die.”

“How do you know all this?” Elmer asks.

“You were drunk and got in your car.  You then traveled at high speed down the road and hit a tree.  Do you remember now?” the counterman asks.

Elmer gives thought to what the counterman has stated.  “Yes, I vaguely remember.”

“How’s the coffee?” the counterman asks.

“It’s good.  It’s very good,” Elmer advises while sipping more of it as he continues to try and remember.

“Yes, it’s real coffee, this is all real.  When you wake up screaming in pain, and covered with blood, that will also be real.  The good thing is that you don’t see anyone here in this town.” The counterman.

“Why is that good?” Elmer asks.

“If any people were present it would mean you were responsible for them being here.  It means that you hit them with the car you were driving, or were responsible for their injury, this time you only hit a tree.  This town, Jusfore, or ‘Just before,’ is here to help you realize the violent, dangerous life you are living, and hopefully stop you,” the counterman.

“I understand.  But who are you?” Elmer asks.

“I am Death,” the counterman.

Elmer then has a strange feeling come over him.  A horrible pain suddenly bombards him as his eyes widen in horror.”

“Now you’ll wake up,” the counterman advises.
