I still remember your number

all the digits are embedded

within my brain

tiny black numbers I dialed so many times

just to reach you

just to hear you

listen to you breathe and sigh

oceans rolling on the other line

wishing I could touch you

but settling for transmission

of our love

across wires, across town

settling like always

on something I wanted so badly

but only got halfway

halfway love's just not enough

I'm halfway ready

to dial once again

I remember the hum of the numbers

pressing each one into the phone

shaky little fingertip waiting for

dull electronic tones

signaling your comforting voice

fourninethree

twothreeone

strange how

what I remember most easily about you

are numbers

especially because I really hate math

and I know now that twominusone

equals me
