"Refuge"

She is screaming-
wretched, eerie wailing
"They're coming!"

Forced into the closet-
the door slams shut,
But I peek- my brother is
still outside- and they're coming!

Sandwiched between coats-
smell of smoke and dog hair
I become invisible-
peering outside my refuge
where Mom is held tightly
"It's okay. Okay," they say.

Wide eyed-
praying they don't find me.
I hide.
