“Amanda!” My mom called to me from across the street. “Time to come inside!”

“Why?” I called back.

“Just come in. Please.” She yelled back.

I could hear something different in her voice. I knew it was time to go.

“Okay be right there!” I smile apologetically to my friend. My mom turned around and went back inside. “Sorry got to go. We’ll hang out later.” I promised.

“It’s cool. See ya!”

I jogged across the street and back to my house. I walk through the kitten and into the family room. My mom and my brother sat on the couch and my father was on the loveseat. Everyone had tears in their eyes.

“Amanda, sit down.” My mom said nicely.

Somehow I knew what she was going to say. Sometimes you just have that sudden realization. It pops into your heard like”Oh!” Even though I knew it didn’t make it any better.

“Your father is leaving things aren’t going well.” My mom said.

I knew things weren’t good between my parents. They fought all the time. My mom always said she would leave my dad and it was my worst nightmare. But nothing in my wildest dreams could have prepared me for this.

“He is going to your aunt’s house.”

I didn’t know what to do. I cried. Tears stared pouring down. Tears turned into sobs. My dad left that night.

I knew it wasn’t my fault it would never be my fault. But something about that makes it even harder. When it is your fault you can make it better. You can do anything and everything to change what happened. Not when it’s not your fault though. You can’t change anything. What happened happened and there was nothing you could ever have done to stop it. You have no control. You’re just an innocent bystander.

I will never forget that day.
