"My story didn't start once upon a time." the little girl argued.

"But how do you know? You didn't hear it, did you?" asked the wise old man.

"No.... but who chose the begginging then?" she winced.

"The storyteller, of course." he smiled

"Who's the storyteller?"

"It could be you, it could be me, why, it could even be that young boy prancing across the street!"

"If we don't know how the story starts, shouldn't we at least get to choose the ending?"

"No, no... It's much more complex than that. Not all endings are happy. We are making our story right now without knowing it. It goes on and on and on. In fact, our story may never end. We won't know until it's over."

"But how could we not know when it ends?"

"We just can't. It's as simple as that."

The little girl watches as a butterfly lies peacfully on her shoulder.

"Does this butterfly have a story?" she asked.

"Of course. Everyone, everything, they all have a story." he rubbed his chin.

"Even that stone?" she said sarcastically.

"Yes, even that stone. For all we know, it could be a million years old. A lot could happen in a million years. It could have been eaten by a dinosour, a pilgram, maybe even the queen!"

Her mouth gaped open, turning into a smile. she hugged the old man and replied, "When the storyteller is ready to end our story, we shouldn't fight. We should simply agree and know that the final version will tell us if it was worth it."

And just like that, he smiled.
