Part 1

She didn't know where she was, but something wasn't right.  She saw a guy butt naked on a sofa, he was having sex with a girl. She couldn't tell who it was, but recognized the strands of long red hair. Raven walked closer and as the guy got up, she saw herself lying on the sofa, unconscious. Raven opened her mouth to scream, but no sound came out.

Raven could hear her fiancé Daylin calling her name, but it was faraway and everything was dark. She was lying down and there was a lot of commotion going on around her, but she didn't dare open her eyes.

"She's waking up. Raven? Sweetie, it's me. Come on now, wake up."Daylin was standing beside her holding her hand.

"Mmmm, where am I? Daylin, what's going on?" Raven slowly opened her eyes and realized she was in the hospital.

"It's ok sweetie, just relax." Daylin said, running his hand across her cheek.

"I had the weirdest dream. I could see myself lying on a sofa and some guy was..." Raven immediately cut off her words and looked at Daylin in horror."Oh my God! Daylin...was I..." Raven couldn't bring herself to finish her sentence, but looked at Daylin, who silently nodded his head 'yes'.

Just as Raven opened her mouth to speak, the doctor pulled the curtain back and approached her bed. He noticed that Raven looked horrified and asked her what was wrong. She told him about the dream she'd had as best as she could, and again couldn't bring herself to say what she was almost sure had happened. The doctor tried to console her and explained to them exactly what the examination would consist of and how long it would take.

After nearly an hour of being poked at and stared at by people Raven didn't know, and feeling even more violated than before, the doctor told her that he was finished and that Raven could get dressed. He stepped out to give them some privacy and to give the examination results to the police.

Afterwards, they were told that they would have to talk to an officer to file a report. Raven wanted nothing more than to go home, take a shower and lay down. However, she gave them as much information as she could, seeing as how she couldn't remember anything before she passed out. They also took the clothes she'd been wearing as evidence and Daylin had brought a change of clothes for her.

"Thank you very much Raven. We'll call you just as soon as we know something. Right now, you go home and take care of yourself."

Raven nodded in agreement as Daylin wrapped his jacket around her shoulders and held her to his side. "She's going home and going to bed." Daylin assured them.

"After I take a long hot shower." Raven corrected him.

They thanked the police again and spoke with the doctor one more time, signed the discharge papers and went home.

In two weeks time Raven and Daylin were both in court and she was forced to face Jake once more. He tried to greet Raven in a friendly manner, but she didn't even acknowledge his presence. Raven was called to the stand to testify and ended up breaking down in tears. Jake on the other hand took his sentencing like he was going on vacation, he was almost smiling! Jake was sentenced to four years, with no parole. Daylin wasn't satisfied; naturally he wanted the bastard to die, but that wasn't going to happen.

About a month later Raven was at her GYN when she found out she was pregnant. Unfortunately, it wasn't Daylin's; it was Jake's.

"Raven, how can you be sure it's not Daylin's?" Her doctor asked after she was finished the examination.

"I don't know...I just know, that's all." Raven replied while fighting to hold back tears. "I never stopped to think whether or not he used a condom. Looks like he didn't."

"I wish there was something I could say to make you feel better about this Raven. But, I do know that after the baby's born there are tests that can be done to find out who the baby's father is. Would you want to do that?"

"Dr. Goldman, there's nothing you can say. But that's ok, it's not yourfault. I'm going to think about having that testing done. I really need to talkto Daylin about it before I make a decision. But thank you very much."

"Ok, well think about it, talk to Daylin, whatever you need to do to make that decision. Be sure to make your monthly check-up appointment with Candace before you leave."

"I'll do that, and I will see you next month."

Daylin was still at work when Raven returned home around 4 o'clock. She knew he'd be home soon, but she was tired. She decided to lay on the sofa just for a few minutes, just to rest.

"Raven? I'm home sweetie." Daylin walked in and closed the door.

As he walked down the hall and into the living room, he saw Raven asleep on the sofa. It looked like she was having a bad dream. She was tossing and turning and her face was distorted in fear. He walked towards her and knelt down beside her.

"Raven. Raven honey, wake up." Daylin gently shook her.

Her eyes flew open and she jumped up and looked around frantically. As soon as her eyes fell on Daylin, she wrapped her arms around his neck and held onto him for dear life.

"Sweetie, what's the matter?" Daylin asked when Raven finally let him go and she looked like she was going to cry.

"I was dreaming and..." She closed her eyes and tried to calm down but could see Jake in her head and she could see it happening all over again. "It's nothing Day, I'm alright." She forced a smile.

"Are you sure? If you want to talk about it, I'm right here." Daylin said, wanting to comfort her.

"Daylin, I said I'm fine! I don't want to talk about it! Now, do you want some dinner or not?" Raven lashed out at him and headed toward the kitchen, preparing to make dinner.

Daylin didn't know how to react to Raven's outburst, but knew enough not to lash out against her. He went upstairs to clean up for dinner and Raven called him downstairs about 15 minutes later.

Daylin still didn't know Raven was pregnant. She didn't know how he'd take it and was almost afraid to tell him.

"I really don't feel like cooking tonight sweetie. Would you mind if we ordered take out?" Raven asked and put her arm around him.

Daylin didn't know what to think of her sudden change in moods, "Sure sweetie, I don't mind. Rae, is something wrong? I know you went to your doctor today. How did that go?"

"Well, she said everything's okay. Except that... I'm pregnant." Daylin didn't reply right away and Raven looked at him, waiting for his reaction.

"Well, um, do you know if it's mine or...you know?"

"I don't know. That's what I wanted to talk to you about. Dr. Goldman said she could run some tests to find out after the baby's born. But only if you want to."

"Well, I say go for it. I mean, if the baby is ours, there's no sense in giving it up for adoption. I know it would be hard. But if the baby is mine, I'd rather we raised it."

"That's exactly what I was thinking, but I figured I'd talk to you before I gave the doctor an answer."

After dinner Raven and Daylin were watching TV and saw the previews fora new movie that had just come out.

"Hey, you want to go to the movies?" Daylin asked Raven. They both wanted to see that new movie.

"Sure, let's go." Raven replied.

They got out of the movie a little after ten and headed home. They both decided to turn in early because Daylin had to get up early the next morning. Daylin would be gone for a month to visit some friends in Nevada and Raven was driving him to the airport.

"I really wish you'd come with me." Daylin said as Raven helped him unload his luggage from the car.

"Sweetie, I wish I could go with you. But you know I can't afford to take a month off work. And besides, I haven't been there long enough. My boss wouldn't give me time off even if I could take it."

"I know, I know. But I'm gonna miss you. It won't be the same without you there."

"Tell me about it. It's going to be weird being home by myself. An empty house is not something I'm used to."

"I know..." Just then, Daylin's flight was called. "I gotta go sweetie. I love you Raven." Daylin gave her a hug and a kiss.

"I love you too Day. Have fun, be careful, and don't worry about me." Daylin gave her another hug and kiss and headed to the gate.

"Are you sure this is what you want?" Daylin asked Raven.

"Yes, I'm sure." She replied.

"You of course realize that once we begin, there's no turning back?" The doctor reminded them.

"We understand." They replied in unison.

The doctor began the IV and soon Raven was beginning to feel the effects of the medication. She couldn't believe that only three months ago she'd been raped by Jake Tompkins at her favorite club and was now pregnant with his child and getting ready to have an abortion. If you'd asked her about this before, she would have told you it would never happen.

Raven woke up suddenly from her dream and couldn't believe what she'd just seen. She ran her hand over her belly and thought about the child growing inside of her. No matter whose baby this was, it deserved to live. Raven wasn't afraid to admit that she'd briefly considered the option of abortion, but after talking with her mother and many of her friends, she decided that adoption would be the only alternative. She and Daylin were only just getting their lives going, and they couldn't afford to take care of a baby. Not that they didn't want children, but it was too soon. And Raven knew Daylin; he wanted a child of his own, not from someone else. Especially someone neither of them knew or liked.

"Daylin? It's me." Raven said into the telephone a few minutes later.

"Rae, is everything alright?" Daylin wondered why she'd be calling him at such an hour.

"Well..." And she proceeded to explain her dream to him.

"Holy shit, you're kidding me."

"I wish I was babe."

"That's it, I'm coming home. I knew this was a bad idea. You need me there too much."

"Daylin Eric! You're coming home in three weeks. THREE WEEKS! I'm okay, I promise. I was just a little shaken up. I'll be just fine."

"But Rae..."

"No buts, don't argue with me. I'll see you in a few weeks. I love you baby."

"I love you too. Bye."

They hung up and Raven lay back down, staring up at the ceiling, thinking. Was she making the right decision? Would she regret this later down the line? 'Will this baby be able to find me if they want to know why we gave them up?' Raven decided that she wanted to know the adoptive parents and keepin contact with them. And if they wouldn't allow it, then they weren't the ones to adopt this child.

Part 2

Raven and Daylin were going out to dinner. This was probably going to be the last time they did this before the baby was born. Raven was beginning to have second thoughts about giving up her baby for adoption. As she's upstairs getting ready; she feels her baby kicking and can't help but stop for a moment to enjoy the feeling. No matter how much she couldn't help but think that this baby didn't belong to Daylin, she couldn't help but have a connection to the life growing inside of her; as all mothers do.

She met Daylin at the bottom of the stairs and they headed for their favorite restaurant. They reached the restaurant in ten minutes time and once inside they waited at the bar until their table was ready. Raven soon began feeling like she was being watched. She told Daylin she was going to the bathroom. As she walked past another couple sitting at the bar, she noticed the woman was watching her. Once inside the bathroom, she heard the door open and another woman walk in. She didn't think anything of it until she exited the stall and saw that it was the woman who had been watching her at the bar.

As Raven approached the sink to wash her hands and check her makeup, the woman kept glancing at her in the mirror. When she caught Raven's eye, she smiled at her.

"May I ask how far along you are?"

"How could you tell I was pregnant?"

"I can just tell. I've been pregnant myself."

"I'm about two and a half months along. I'm barely showing at all."

"It's wonderful being pregnant isn't it?"

"I suppose you could say that." Raven wasn't very enthusiastic about her response.

"You don't seem very happy about having a baby. Is your boyfriend upset about it?"

"Well, it's not that I don't enjoy being pregnant, and it's not that my boyfriend is upset about it. The truth is, I was raped." Raven wasn't sure why she was telling this stranger, but for some reason, she felt she could trust her.

"Oh honey, that's awful. I'm so sorry to hear that."

"Yeah well..." Raven was reluctant to continue their conversation, until the woman confided in her.

"Well, I have known the joy of being pregnant, though I've never been able to carry a baby to full term. I've had three miscarriages and it looks as though I won't be able to have children of my own."

They finally exited the ladies' room and Raven was introduced to the woman's husband and finally found out the woman's name as well. "This is my husband Evan, and my name is Stacy."

Just as Raven shook Evan's hand, she felt Daylin's hand on her back.

"Hey sweetie. This is Stacy and her husband Evan. This is my fiancé Daylin."

After a few minutes, Raven and Daylin were told their table was ready. They said goodbye to Stacy and Evan and were escorted to their table.

"Raven, what did you and Stacy talk about?" Daylin asked after they ordered.

"My pregnancy. I told her what happened to me. She told me she's never been able to carry a baby full term. She's had three miscarriages."

"Wow, that's terrible. Was anything said about you giving the baby up for adoption?"

"She seemed interested. It was almost like she knew I'd most likely be giving the baby up for adoption, given the circumstances."

After dinner Raven and Daylin saw Stacy and Evan as they were getting ready to leave. Raven and Stacy exchanged phone numbers and agreed they'd talk on the phone soon. As Raven and Daylin left, Raven couldn't help but wonder about the couple they'd just met. She wondered why Stacy wasn't able to carry a baby to term. Any woman who wants a baby has every right to have one; even if it wasn't hers biologically. Raven decided then that she was going to bring up the possibility of adoption the next time she spoke to Stacy.

The next week, Raven was going to the doctor for her two month checkup. As the doctor finished examining her, she asked Raven if she had any idea of when she'd conceived. She wasn't sure, so the doctor did a sonogram and found out that Raven was ten weeks along. They worked backwards and figured out that the baby was conceived around the 7th of July. There was a small burst of hope inside Raven that the baby might be Daylin's, she wanted to hold tight to that hope.

As time went on, Raven and Stacy grew closer. They started spending just about every day together. Stacy was thrilled when Raven asked her if she'd want to adopt her baby. Raven was still uncertain about giving up her baby; she'd become attached, which is expected. She discussed her feelings with Stacy and she understood. But Raven also confided in Stacy about having dreams and flashbacks of the night she was raped. Every time that happened, she told herself that she was doing the right thing.

Seven months later Raven was slipping her shoes on to walk to the store to pick up something for dinner when she had her first contraction. Raven immediately picked up the phone and called Daylin who came home right away. By the time he got there, her contractions were pretty regular and coming closer together. Daylin phoned Raven's doctor and they were instructed to get to the hospital as soon as possible.

"Daylin, make sure you call Stacy and Evan so they can meet us at the hospital." Raven said as Daylin buckled her into the passenger seat of his car.

"Shit! I almost forgot." Daylin cursed and pulled out his cell phone and called them.

When Raven and Daylin arrived at the hospital, Dr. Goldman was waiting for them and there was a room already set up for them. Daylin found Stacy and her husband Evan waiting in the lobby fifteen minutes after they'd arrived. Stacy and Evan didn't dare ask if they were allowed in the delivery room, but when the phone rang in the waiting room and it was Raven, they were thrilled to get to talk to her for a few minutes.

Raven hadn't said anything to anyone, but she was still having second thoughts. Naturally, she'd become quite attached to the child that had been growing inside of her. She didn't dare say anything to Daylin; he'd get angry with her now that they had decided to move forward with the adoption, paternity test or not. And Stacy and Evan would be disappointed and hurt.

"You ready to have a baby Raven?" Dr. Goldman asked her once thevepidural had started.

"As ready as I'm ever gonna be." Raven said as she felt anothervcontraction coming.

~*~*Two hours later*~*~

"Raven, I don't know what we're going to do. The baby's head hasn't moved after all the pushing you've done. Your best bet in order to have a healthy baby is a Caesarian Section." Dr. Goldman informed her.

"Whatever has to be done. I know that you know what's best for me andvmy baby." Raven glanced at Daylin and noticed the look on his face. He'd picked up on what she just said.

"Rae, what did you just say?" Daylin asked as Dr. Goldman stepped out to get the anesthesiologist and prep for surgery.

"What do you mean Day?"

"You said 'my baby'. What's that supposed to mean?" Daylin said getting upset.

"What do you mean Day? It is my baby, no matter what happens, it's my baby. I carried it for nine months, no matter who raises it."

"That's not what you meant Raven, don't lie to me." Daylin was getting angry at Raven and was about to get angrier after what Raven was about to say.

"Daylin. All right, I level with you. I've been having second thoughts recently..."

"Are you saying that you want to keep this baby? We talked about this already Raven." Daylin replied, crossing his arms, his gaze set.

"I know, but Daylin, you need to try and see it from my point. This baby grew inside me for nine months. I felt its first movements. I lied awake at night as it moved while you were sleeping. Seeing the sonograms of this baby and hearing the heartbeat. Daylin, tell me that you haven't become even slightly attached to this child. You sat with me and felt the baby move and almost seemed to enjoy it..."

"Yeah, because I couldn't help but think about when we have our own children and I get to feel their movements. That's what I was thinking. And to say that I haven't grown attached would be a lie, because I have. But I also know that this baby might not be mine, and that kills me. I know that you want nothing more than to keep this baby, but we've made a promise to Stacy and Evan. If you break that promise, they'll never forgive us."

"Day, I'm aware of that. But you gotta understand. There's a special connection between a mother and their child; a bond. If they can't understand that, then they're not meant to be parents. That's all there is to it. Plus, what if it turns out the baby is yours? Are you seriously telling me you still want to give it up?"

"I really don't know what I'd do if we found that out. We need to find that out first. I suppose you'd like me to tell them?"

"If you don't mind. I have to be prepped for surgery. The less upset I get, the better. But you have got to be with me during surgery."

"Trust me, I will be, I promise." Daylin kissed Raven and stepped out to tell Stacy and Evan of their decision.

Part 3

~*~*Out in the waiting room*~*~

"Raven said WHAT!?" Stacy didn't care about being quiet in a hospital. All she cared about was the fact that the agreement between her and Raven maybe broken with no warning whatsoever.

"I'm sorry Stacy, but that's how she feels. She's become attached to the baby. You have to know that there's a special bond between a mother and their child that can be hard to let go of. Plus, if it is mine, I might have second thoughts about giving this baby up" Daylin said, trying to be sensitive.

"Daylin, I do understand, but you also have to understand. This may be our last chance to become parents. You and Raven have your entire lives ahead of you to have a family." Stacy and Evan hastily gathered their things and left without another word.

Daylin didn't have time to consider going after them. Just as he started down the hallway, a nurse grabbed him and told him that if he wanted to be in the operating room with Raven, he had to get ready. He followed the nurse into Raven's room and put on scrubs as well as a mask. They left the hospital room and headed to the operating room.

After about 15 minutes, Dr. Goldman announced that Raven and Daylin were the proud parents of a beautiful baby girl. The nurse brought her around so Raven and Daylin could see her and Raven gave her baby a kiss. Daylin just looked at the baby. He couldn't believe that he was trying to talk Raven into giving up her baby. He leaned down to Raven, gave her a kiss and whispered an apology to her. She had already begun crying, but when Daylin expressed his feelings, it made her even happier.

After Raven was settled in her room, she asked Daylin, "What did Stacy and Evan say when you talked to them?"

"Well, I told them that you'd become quite attached to the baby andvthat you were considering keeping the baby. They got a little upset, but I think they understand. At least I hope they do." Daylin said, starting to feel guilty about the whole thing.

"Well, they have to know that nothing's final just yet. As soon as we can, I really wanted to have the paternity test done." Raven said, beginning to feel guilty about the whole situation.

"Ok, I just saw the doctor walk past. She'll probably be back in a few minutes and then we can talk to her about it."

The next day Dr. Goldman was at the hospital with another patient and she stopped by to talk to Raven. Daylin was at home getting cleaned up and resting.

"I'm sorry I didn't stop in yesterday and see you, I had a situation that demanded all my attention."

"I understand completely. I wanted to talk to you about having a paternity test done to see whether or not Daylin is the father of the baby." Raven hated referring to her as "the baby", but hadn't picked out a name yet.

"Sure, but we need Daylin, of course."

"Speak of the devil, there he is now." Daylin had just opened the door and walked in.

"You must've known we were talking about you." Dr. Goldman said, smiling.

"Guess so. So, what's going on?" He asked, sitting in the chair closest to Raven.

"Well, remember what we talked about, having a paternity test done to see whether or not you were the baby's father?" Raven asked as a nurse brought the baby in and placed her in Raven's arms so she could nurse her.

"Sure I do. When did you want to get that done?"

"Just as soon as I've finished nursing her."

"Ok, but won't this hurt the baby?" Daylin asked, worried.

"Well, that depends on which test we perform. There is one that requires us to draw blood from you and the baby. It would hurt her a bit, but it's a lot more accurate than the swab test. That one just consists of placing a cotton swab in each of your mouths and getting a saliva sample. It's easier, faster, and of course painless. But as I said, the blood test is much more accurate."

"Sweetie, I think a few minutes of pain that she'll never remember is worth the assurance of the test results." Raven didn't want to see the baby in pain either, but wanted the most accurate test results possible.

"I guess you're right Rae.  As soon as you're finished we'll do it."

Raven didn't say anything, but she secretly hoped in her heart of hearts that the baby was Daylin's. It would be hard raising her and everything, but it would definitely be more than worth it.

After the baby was fed, burped, and changed, the nurse came in to draw blood from Daylin and the baby. Raven was trying to keep the baby still, but she was getting upset at seeing her baby in pain. It took Raven a few minutes to calm her down after the nurse was finished. They were told it would take three days for the test results to come back. Since Raven and the baby, whose name is Raine Adrienne, were going home the next day, they made an appointment with Dr. Goldman to get the test results once they came in.

Once Raven was home and everything was settled with the baby, there wasn't much to do. Raven couldn't help but think about the results of that paternity test. She voiced her feelings to Daylin, and he told her something surprising.

"Rae, I really hope that Raine's mine. I know we said it was too soon for us to have a family. But now that she's here, I don't want to give her up." Daylin smiled as he watched Raine sleeping on Raven's chest.

"Daylin, nobody said we have to give her up for adoption if you're not her biological father. You can still be her daddy, there's nothing stopping you."

"I know; I just don't know if I could live with the truth if I'm not her father."

"So we don't get the test results." Raven suggested, not really meaning it.

"Rae. We paid for that test out of pocket. We can't do that. And besides, the doubt would always be there. I don't know if I can live with that."

"I know, I didn't really mean it. Day?"

"Yeah baby, you need something?"

"Yeah, I need you to pick up Raine without waking her. I have to go to the bathroom."

"Oh, ok." Daylin smiled and gently lifted Raine off Raven's chest and laid her in her bassinet.

The next day was bright, sunny, and warm so Raven and Daylin decided to take Raine for a short walk around the neighborhood. Naturally, all the neighbors were making a big deal about Raine. It was a Sunday afternoon, so just about all the neighbors were home. Nobody knew Raven had been raped; they'd kept it under wraps. Although, everyone would get slightly suspicious if Raine suddenly disappeared; but Raven and Daylin weren't worried about what the neighbors would think.

The next day dragged on slowly, their appointment wasn't until 2pm. Raven and Daylin were both very anxious as well as nervous. When 1:30 rolled around, they decided they couldn't take it anymore and left for the doctor's office, even though it was only a ten minute drive, in the hopes of getting taken early. Once they reached the parking lot of the doctor's office, Raven was a nervous wreck. She nearly left Raine in the car, until Daylin reminded her to get Raine out. After that, Daylin carried Raine the rest of the way.

Daylin and Raven were smart in showing up early; there had been a couple cancellations that morning that hadn't been filled, so the doctor got to them fifteen minutes before their scheduled time. Daylin waited in the waiting room with Raine while Raven was examined. The examining room was small, so Daylin and Raine would have the room crowded.

"Well Raven, looking good. Once you're dressed, you can go into my office. I'm going to go get Daylin so we can discuss the results of the paternity test."

"Ok." Raven got dressed as quickly as she could and got into Dr.Goldman's office a couple minutes after Daylin and Dr. Goldman.

"Well, before I give you the results, what were you hoping for?"

"We were both actually hoping Daylin was her father." Raven responded nervously, and Daylin nodded.

"Well then, you'll be pleased. According to the results, there's a 99.6% chance that Daylin is the father."

Dr. Goldman didn't say anything else, but simply watched their expressions. Raven put a hand over her mouth and tears began falling silently down her cheeks. Daylin couldn't speak either, but couldn't stop smiling.

Finally, Raven spoke. "D-Dr. Goldman, are you sure?" Raven was in shock.

"Yes Raven I'm sure. There's very little chance Daylin isn't Raine's father."

"Oh my God..." Daylin finally spoke. "I can't believe it." Daylin was slowly coming to the realization that he wasn't dreaming.

Raven and Daylin thanked Dr. Goldman many times over before they finally left her office and Raven made an appointment for her check-up in amonth. They decided to go out to an early dinner to celebrate. On arriving at the very same restaurant they'd first met Stacy and Evan, Raven thought she recognized their car in the parking lot. But it could have been her imagination. She didn't say anything to Daylin; no point in worrying him when it probably was just her imagination.

Once inside, they were seated almost immediately. As they walked past another dining room, Raven was sure she'd seen Stacy and Evan sitting at atable in the far corner of the room. Still, she didn't say anything to Daylin; it's not like they were in the same room as them. Raven hadn't thought about how she was going to tell Stacy what had happened. She was seriously considering writing Stacy a letter.

Fortunately, Raven didn't have to think about that at all. After they ordered Raven went to the ladies' room to change Raine's diaper. On passing the dining room on her way back to the table, she chanced a glance into the room to see if Stacy and Evan were still there; but they had already gone.

Raven did in fact write Stacy a letter explaining the situation, how very sorry she was, but that Stacy and Evan were more than welcome to visit anytime they wanted to. Raven never heard anything from Stacy, but would see her in passing from time to time. Stacy never stopped to talk to Raven. Raven wasn't worried about it, but was disappointed about how the situation ended.

Raven and Daylin were married a few years later and Raine soon had a little brother named Daylin Eric, Jr.
