wings forged of candlewax
and whispered rumors
do not hold well against the
heat of an angry sun.
and you can flap as hard as you can
with freedom against your fingertips,
but, son, be careful of
the churning sea below.
we've all fallen into it,
riding on the palm of surf,
fingers of foam that burn noses
and flood lungs.
son, you'll never escape your prison;
your wings are all ready melting.

inspired by icarus and daedalus, of course.
