UNEXPECTED VISITOR

A Short Screenplay By: Andrew Patterson

EXT. GRANT’S HOME – NIGHT

We see a THREE STORY brick home standing INFRONT of the CAMERA. A LARGE wooden fence guards the home, and crickets chirp in the BACKGROUND.

We HEAR an ANGRY VOICE yell OFFSCREEN.

ANGRY VOICE (O.S.)
Get the hell in there, ya
little brat!

CUT TO:

INT. GRANT’S HOME

We see GRANT ADAMS, 8, short BROWN hair. He is violently THROWN into a SMALL closet. He hits the wall with his back, and he slides to the FLOOR.

ANGRY VOICE (O.S.)
If you’re good, we’ll let
you out in the morning. Now
go to bed.

The closet door SLAMS shut OFFSCREEN, and Grant flinches with it SHUTS. We then HEAR the door LOCK. Grant puts his hands to his eyes, and BAWLS.

CUT TO:

GRANT – SKY VIEW

The lights in the closet are OFF. Grant lies on the floor on a white pillow. We CUT TO a DIFFERENT ANGLE as Grant shifts himself into a comfortable position.

CLOSE UP: GRANT

The CAMERA does a CLOSEUP on Grant. Tear streaks stain his FACE. His eyes shut for no more than half-a-second before the LIGHT in the CLOSET turns on.

Grant sits straight up, his eyes wide open, staring directly at the CAMERA.

We then see a dark solute of a large human.

CUT TO: GRANT

Grant has the TERRIFIED look on his face, and looks as if he is about to yell for help.

BACK TO: Solute

As the FIGURE bends over, the lights adjust, and we then see a teenage girl, REBECCA ADAMS, 14, long BLONDE hair, green eyes.

Grant smiles at Rebecca.

GRANT
Rebecca, you’re okay!

Rebecca SMILES.

REBECCA
Hey Grant.

CUT TO:

WIDE VIEW

Grant reaches his arms up, and he gives REBECCA a huge hug. After a FEW SECONDS, they stop hugging; Rebecca sits down against the wall, opposite Grant.

GRANT
Becca, what
are you doing?
here?

REBECCA (smirking)
What do you think? I live
here, doofus.

GRANT
I know you do,
but you aren’t
supposed to be
here. I thought
you were gone.

REBECCA
Who told you
that?

GRANT
Mom and Dad.

Rebecca gets to her knees, and she helps Grant to HIS knees. Rebecca holds Grant’s hands, and the CAMERA goes to a DIFFERENT ANGLE.

REBECCA
Listen to me, Grant
I may be gone in this world,
but I am still here, otherwise
you wouldn’t be able
to see me. I don’t
want you to ever forget
that, okay?

A single tear ROLLS down Grant’s FACE.

GRANT
I feel so alone,
Rebecca, what am I
supposed to do? Everything’s
gone to shit since
you left.

REBECCA
Hey, don’t cuss.
Just because Mom
and Dad do it doesn’t
mean it’s okay.

GRANT
Sorry.

Rebecca SMILES again.

REBECCA
Come here.

Rebecca pulls Grant in, and they hug again.

REBECCA
I love you, Grant

GRANT (muffled)
I love you too, Rebecca.
I miss you very much, and so
does Mom and Dad.

REBECCA
I know they do. I
miss all of you very
much. But I am with God
now, and all of you will
see me soon.

GRANT
Promise?

REBECCA
Promise.

Grant PULLS away from Rebecca. His face is FULL of tears. Rebecca begins to help him get ready for bed. She LAYS him down on his pillow, and she PULLS the THICK blanket over his body.

REBECCA
Don’t be sad, Grant.
Get some sleep, everything
is going to be okay.

GRANT
What if I need you again?

REBECCA
If you need me, I’ll
Always be in your heart.
Always.

GRANT
Okay.

GRANT’S eyes begin to fill with tears, AGAIN.

REBECCA
Bye, Grant. Love
You.

GRANT
Love you too.

GRANT lies down on his pillow as the CLOSET LIGHTS shut off. He SLOWLY drifts off to sleep.

CUT TO:

GRANT’S KITCHEN – MORNING

Grant sits at the KITCHEN TABLE, slurping down a bowl of cereal. A NEWSPAPTER sits next to him.

DIFFERENT ANGLE

We then see the NEWSPAPER, and on the front page, in the corner, is a PHOTO of REBECCA, with the HEADLINE:

“ONE YEAR AGO TODAY, REBECCA ADAMS, 14, COMMITTED SUICIDE BY DRIVING CAR INTO DEEP CANYON.”

Grant continues to eat his CEREAL. He SMILES.
AND the SCREEN CUTS TO BLACK.
