Cardboard Box
I want to cry when I see him
picking through the garbage bins
Glad when he finds a piece of clothes
joyful for aluminum cans
He stands in line for hours
just to get a decent meal
Then he returns to his cardboard box
when he`s got his fill
Safe within his cardboard box
a blanket and a prayer
He dreams a dream to be anywhere
Anywhere but there

Sure is a nice feeling of holding onto faith. Even though we all want to be anywhere sometimes. Keeping prayer is definately not to miss out on. Great writing, that was very wonderful. Matthew
Thank you Matthew. Yes its faith that keeps us hanging on.
As in this poem. Even though this man is down to living in a cardboard box.He still has faith in prayer, and in God.Though he dreams to be somewhere else, anywhere but where he is. He has a most glorious mansion in heaven. And that isnt a dream. less you Matthew, Angellynn.
oh yes I have always ahd a soft spot for the homeless.
In some ways you can see that many of them have outgrown mainstream society. I know many, many, many homeless people that would rather sleep outside then go inside to the shelters, seriously, believe me I was one of them. I have often thought of ways in which we could help them feel more comfort right in the areas they live; the camps and what not. going in there and offering services, clothing, blankets even money etc etc....there are jsut so, so, so , so many things we can do. this poem is good; I like it because it offers a blanket and love; it recognises him as the fine spirit he is....and weather or not he does dream of being elsewhere he does go home when he dies, to the very same place we all go. Many of them are closer to it than we.
Air you are so very right. The homeless dont require much, only necessities to meet their need. Their not beggers. I have met a few myself. And they were very respectful, and thankful for my help.Which is more than I can say for a lot of people who arent homeless. Most people confuse the homeless with beggers and thieves. That is far from the truth.Thank you so much for your comment, and for sharing.Angellynn.
This is very somber but sadly it's true. Don't know how many homeless there are around but you trap the reality of it nicely
So sad. Well written. You captured his plight perfectly. You have a way of grasping your topic and pouring it out upon your readers so gently. You did a wonderful job!

So sad, but so well written. You really get readers imersed into the subject, because you write it so well. Well done and I'm looking forward to reading even more from you! Let me know when you add more please!
i really loved this and the message it gave out. thank you so much for sharing ((((((Hugs))))) joss.
I think it should have been longer, or if not longer then definitely broken up into stanzas. Also, I'm not trying to start a theological debate here, but I highly doubt that the homeless feel "safe" with just a box, a blanket, and a prayer. It takes a bit more than faith to be safe when you're living on the streets.
With a vice like greed being the basis of our economic system, the homeless are a monument to the corruption of the human spirit that living this lie brings.
i really loved this poem, it touched me cause when i was young i lived in and out of a homeless shelter and i was round people like that for soo long and at one time i was one thank you.
Angellynn this was probably one of the most heart warming poems I have read in a very long time. The pictures that came into my mind were just so vivid. I have seen may homeless people here where I live and in bigger cities like Memphis and Nashville. You are so kind in writing this in the manner that you did. To be able to take such a sad situation and make it beautiful is a gift. Bless you for your kindness. Susan :)
I so was touched by the poem. I am a believer in Christ and feel giving to the needy is what Christians should be doing. I find it so wonderful to give out clothing and attention and prayers. I so would like more people to think about serving in this way. It is such a huge blessing.
