Proposal Beneath The Snow

Beneath a blanket, I cuddled beside the fireplace. It was the coldest winter of the season in four years. The radio predicted more bad weather in the next twelve hours, maybe a blizzard if the northern winds changed.

The snow was getting thicker and tempertures were steadily dropping. The winds harshly blew against the already frosted window panes causing them to nearly shatter. I could feel a chill in the cabin though I sat closly by the fire.

My boyfriend, Thorn, begged me to come sking with him before  the weather got worse, but I was too terrified to go. He was a pro skier, and I was just a beginner. I'd never survive out there should the blizzard hit us.

I had been feeling pretty sick and it was getting worse as the morning ticked on. Thorn had gotten up early to make breakfast and coffee before heading out. I took one bite, jumped up, and raced to the bathroom.

" What's wrong with me?" I asked myself throwing up again. Thinking I had picked up a bug, I brushed it off as a twenty-four hour thing.

Still pretty ill, I asked Thorn to take the slope alone, as I wasn't well enough to leave the cabin at the moment. He hesitated going alone, but I assured him I would be fine. He handed me a walkie talkie, and told me to let him know if I got any worse.

Thorn geared up, kissed me goodbye, and was off to the slopes. I decided to go back to bed and try to sleep off this illness. I closed my eyes wondering how I was going to tell him I wanted to break up with him. I mean we've been together four years, long enough he could have ask me to marry him by now if he loved me. It was my dream to marry Thorn and start a family together. But I guess my dreams weren't the same dreams as his.

I finally woke and glanced at my watch. Several hours had passed since Thorn left, and I haven't heard from him. I picked up the walkie talkie and called his name, but I didn't get a response. I tried again and still no answer.

" Something is wrong," I thought gearing up to search for him.

I was careful taking the slope, and terrified I wouln't find him. I was nearing the bottom when I noticed something between two pine trees. As I got nearer, I noticed it was the tip of a ski. My thoughts were, "someone had taken a fall and froze to death." I hurried to the spot and began to dig beneath the snow.

Two or three feet under, I unearthed a leg that appeared to be broken with the bone showing. There was so much blood I became sick again. Horrified, I raced to the ski lift and headed back up for help.

After reaching the top, I told the manager what I had found, and they raced down the slope on snowmobiles. A female worker stayed with me and made cocoa to calm me down.

Fourty-five minutes passed when we heard them returning. I ran to the window only to find the body was my boyfriend Thorn. I fell to the floor in tears. " NO! " I screamed. " Thorn was a pro. How could this have happened?"

The manager came in and handed me Thorns belongings. " I'm sorry Miss, but he lost too much blood. I'm afraid  he didn't survive the spill."

I took Thorns belongings back to our cabin, and found the walkie talkie was badly ruined. "That's why he didn't hear my call." I thought. Then inside his jacket I found a little black box, and a note.

I opened the note and read what it said, " Misty I love you with all my heart. I know I haven't been the man you fell in love with, but tonight I have a surprise for you. All my love, Thorn."

My hands were shaking as I opened up the black box. Inside was a beautiful engagement ring, and another note that he had written." Misty, will you marry me? "

My heart sank, as tears poured from my eyes. Suddenly there was a knock on the door. It was my parents. Mom grabbed me and held me tight in tears, " I'm so sorry baby."

On the way home, dad informed me Thorns parents had his body sent for an autopsy. Later we found out it was pronounced a tragic accident. We buried Thorn in our home town. I visited his grave most every day, and missed him so much.

Eight months had passed since that tragic day, as I screamed out in pain. " Push Misty," the doctor yelled. Minutes later I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. I decided to name him Thorn Jr. after his father. Though I'll never see Thorn in life, I can see him in his sons eyes.
