Strings Attached

The February moon was bright and beautiful, as Jake and I lie beneath the star filled sky on a blanket cuddled together, and making out. It was cool, but It didn't bother me at the moment. Lost in his arms, I imagined we were husband and wife. It had been a dream of mine for a while now, I was ready to take the plunge, " but was Jake ready?"

He turned his lips to my ear and whispered," will you be my Valentine?"

There was a smile on my lips as I turned to face him," I thought you had forgotten," l laughed, and gently punched his arm. Jake smiled and handed me a bright red envelope with a long strand of string that led from the contents, to his left pocket.

" What are you up to Jake Flanders? "

Jake and I have been together six years. We met in college, graduated together, and attended Law school together. Our hopes were to pass the bar and go into business together. We were known as the two most likely to marry, a little something my sorority sisters and I made up as a joke to Jake and his fraternity brothers.

" Open it," Jake smiled.

I carefully began to open the envelope, my hands were shaking and clammy as I gently pulled the card out. The string was still attached as I read the words written in bold red letters, " Katie, you are my very breath, my heart belongs to you, will you be my Valentine, and make all my dreams come true? Signed, Jake."

A look of disappointment crossed my face. I was expecting a lot more than a card this year, a whole lot more. Jake took my chin and pulled my face toward him, a small tear fell from my eye, as he gently kissed me.

" Don't you want to know about the string?"

I managed to answer him with a smile," What is it? "

" Follow the string and you will see." Jake laughed.

I did as he asked, and inside his pocket was a little black velvet box. My expression went from disappointment to surprised as I opened it. Inside the box was the most beautiful ring I'd ever seen. Shocked,  I began to cry. " Jake, it's so beautiful. "

He took my hand, " Katie, I want you to know how much I truly love you, you've been by side a for a long time, through thick and thin, you have always been there for me, will you be my wife? "

My heart was beating so fast, as I looked deep into his blue eyes, " Yes! Yes, i'll marry you Jake." I didn't know whether to jump up and down, or jump into his arms. I jumped into his arms, and we made love again. We lie holding one another, and looking up into the midnight sky. The ring sparkled in the moonlight, as Jake told me about the ring.

" It belonged to my grandmother, and holds a very special place in my heart. I wanted to wait for the perfect moment to give it to the woman who deserved it, the woman i would spend the rest of my life with, the woman who would be my Valentine forever, with strings attached."
