Your First Child

They come into the world on a siren’s wail, kicking and screaming.

You take them home. You don’t have the first clue what to do with them.

You give them their first bath with your heart in your throat.

You place them in their bassinette-slash-crib watching over them until the sun comes up.

They cut their first tooth and you damn near have a heart attack.

Everything starts going in the mouth. Every barking cough,

And every “achoo” gives you grey hair. The first of many to come.

You put your hand on their chest, to make sure they’re still breathing,

And they start crawling.

Fast-forward to the first day of school.

You spend so much money preparing for it.

You spend so much time getting ready for it

That you almost forget the one important lesson,

You haven’t had enough time to master yet.

How to start letting go.
