I never quite had the loving daddy that everyone seems to so fondly mention from time to time.
I hear my friends speaking of their father's as if they were really humans and actually felt like
they had some sort of bonds with their dad.

I had a father I would always respect and admire throughout my childhood. He always
finished everything he ever committed himself to and did it with great respect and dignity.
He taught me commitment and dignity.

At least I had that

I used to get jealous of my friends for having fathers who would sit down and watch Saturday
morning cartoons with them. Now I just admire their father who would take hours out of his day
to not just be a father to them but a daddy as well.

I remember my father taking us on a father/daughters camping trip weekends. We'd go fishing and
hiking whether we wanted to or not. My father taught us skills on how to survive out in the wilderness.

At least I had that

Not one time during my childhood can I remember my father holding out his arms to me and telling me he
loved me, like so many of the girl's dads that came to pick them up from school every day did.

I do remember my father going to work every day even when he didn't feel well. I remember him getting up
every day before dawn and heading out to have coffee and then start his day teaching at the college.
He taught me strength and perserverance.

At least I had that

My friends used to tell me about how their father's would play with them in the afternoons when they got home from work.
They'd play dolls, or tea parties, or even dress up. My father would come home and turn on the news and sit and relax
on the couch falling asleep to the tv.
My father taught me how to work hard and play hard.

At least I had that

My father taught me commitment and dignity.
He taught me skills on how to survive.
He taught me strength and perserverance.
He taught me how to work hard and play hard.

He may have never said that but in everything he did it was there.

At least I had that.
