Time to Do the Dishes!

Poem by: Angie Blake

Summary

I got irritated with my kids when they wouldn't do the dishes one day when they were told. It's a true story, LoL, I guess sometimes actions speak louder than words!

"Time to do the dishes"
I'd say reminding the children of their daily chores,
Still the cartoons play and the headphones are on,
Still no dishes are getting done
I remove the headphones and say a little louder and firmer
looking at them directly in the eyes
"Time to do the dishes."
The television's on and phones in their ears
someone's playing on Facebook
Still no ones doing the dishes
I turn off the television, hang up the phone
Turn off the computer
and say even louder this time
"Time to do the dishes!"
Still a book is being read and a tablet written in
A game of tag is being played all over the house
Still no one's doing the dishes!
I take the book away, and put the tablet up
stop the game of tag that was being played all over the house,
I stood there and folded my arms and tapped my foot
I waited for some complete silence,
"DO THE DISHES!" I yelled so loud
I think that New Jersey could've heard me!
Yet, still no one was doing the dishes!
I strip their rooms of anything and everything electronic and fun
I strip the sheets off their beds
I put the dirty dishes in the drainer and set them directly in the middle of their beds
I tell them to go to their room and close the door and think about things.
Quietly they come out, carrying the load of dirty dishes
Straight to the sink they go. and Voila!
The dishes are done, the counters wiped down and the dining room table has been cleaned.

Quite a few years later I go to my daughters house to visit with her and my grandkids.
She shows me her house.
Every room is totally spotless.
Except for one little boys room.
I smile when I see the dishes in the drainer sitting in the middle of his stripped bed.
I'm sure the people of New Jersey appreciate me.
I smile at my daughter when I see my Grandson pick up the strainer and say,
"Excuse me, Grandma, I must do the dishes now!"
