My mother was mad at me for staying up too late. She was mad at me for no reason. I wrote this for her to understand.

I’m sorry you don’t understand me,

And you don’t understand what I do.

I know you think I’m a monster, but believe me,

I’m trying not to let the monster loose.

I’m sorry you don’t like me,

And you don’t like what I say.

I know you think I’m a beast, but believe me,

I’m just human decay.

I’m sorry you don’t know me,

And you don’t know what I mean.

I know you think I’m an alien, but believe me,

I’m not what I seem.

I’m not the only one like me.

There are others just the same.

They lose their minds and break their strings

And are all just as insane.

We are all one of kind,

Though you don’t realize,

We all have great plans,

And all seek to sympathize.

So don’t worry about me,

Or tell me that I’m wrong.

Because if I wasn’t sleepless

Who would hear the birds’ songs?
