This is my first villanelle. It is about my grandmother from the Philippines whom I call "Apuma". She raised me from birth until I was about 5 years old and this poem expresses what I would do if I could go back and how I feel about the situation now.

If I could go back

I'd make sure you stayed.

I miss you, Apuma.

I'd run through that airport gate

and tell the pilot we can't part ways.

If only I could go back.

It hurts me to always wait

so like you taught me, I pray and I pray.

I tell God I miss you, Apuma.

Tell your husband that the states

is where you belong every single day.

I'd do it myself if I could go back.

Never will this pain in my heart abate.

Say goodbye to the Philippines and run away.

Live with us again because Apuma, I miss you.

If you were here, life would be so great.

I don't want to hear of the day you pass away.

I'd take care of you if I could go back,

but I'm still here now and I'm missing you, Apuma.
