Razor sharp winter’s night

wind howls outside

rain beats, drums, thumps

relentless and incessant…

I am desensitised

View it all detachedly

water spreading in

violent icy patterns on

double glazed windows…

never intruding

Warm woollen doona world

euphoric haze of security

embers glow from downstairs fires.

I snuggle, indulgent comfort…

his body next to me

“I’d hate to be a swaggie tonight”

he whispers warmly

wraps me in his arms

I stir slightly in my cocoon…

remember

Winter’s night of shadows

shudders, freezing monotones

damp invading through cracks

rain dripping into cold steel buckets…

in bed huddling alone

Pinprick becomes a crevice

the night continues its wintry onslaught

house of chill and vulnerability

still out there…

victims in my thoughts

Uncomfortable amidst my comfort

shivering despite protection

defenceless against the elements

trappings of security, love, warmth…

temporary deflection
