I’m down 24-3 on Madden. I can’t talk to my competitor. I have NEVER played this badly. Sweat beads down my neck as I sit on the very edge of my seat. My t-shirt is drenched, and I can barely sit still. My opponent’s screen name is “xbox_abuser_number_2”.
I seriously want to talk to him. I need to know his trick.
His team has the ball. It’s the end of the third quarter, and he’s close to scoring another touchdown. Before I can do anything, the auto-crowd is going insane. 31-3. I request to talk with him. I need to know his skills.
He declines. I’m frustrated, since this will be my first ever loss. I play this game, and many others, all the time. Like, every time I can. I usually get like 5 hours a day. My appearance is affected by it. I used to have short hair, with a fit body and good looks. Now, my hair is long, I’m out of shape, and I broke out with acne. I look like a mess. Maybe it’s because I’m 15, but I would prefer to blame my laziness.
Another few minutes go by. I’m able to score an actual touchdown. 31-10. Then, as I kick the ball back, he runs it for a touchdown. 38-10. I request to talk. He says yes, and I put on my headset.
Before he can say anything, I start. “Alright, what’s your trick? I’ve played this game 1585 times, and I haven’t lost once. I need to know what you’re doing. Just tell me, is it wearing gloves? Eating different food? TELL ME!” I shout into my headset.
“All I do is just play. I eat some brownies and just play. I’ve played 1590 times and haven’t lost. Guess you have some competition…‘xbox_addict_373’”, a female voice says.
I’m in stun. I, Xbox live player since it first came out, am losing to a girl. A female. Opposite of male. “Wh-what?” I sputter.
“Did I stutter? I said, ‘I eat some brownies and just play’. Was that too hard for you to understand?” she said.
“Well, I heard that but I was “what-ing” over your…voice”, I replied nervously.
“Ohh, haha”, she said, “it’s because I’m a girl, right?”
“Mhm”, I manage to say.
“Well girls can be good at these games too”, she said, “What’s your name?”
“Drew, you?” I ask.
“Kamryn. K-A-M-R-Y-N, in case you’re wondering”, Kamryn said, “Age?”
“15”. I score another touchdown. 38-17.
“Same”, Kamryn said. “Now, are you really who you say you are? Because I hate getting fakes. If you are fake, please tell me.”
“Everything I say is completely true. I hate getting fakes as well. A lot of them try to act smart, but they’re probably dumb-asses.”
“I’m true too. Friend me?”
“Of course”, I say with a smile. I add her to my list, and she accepts.
“Awes”, she says, “Look out!”
I look at the screen and see another touchdown being scored. 45-10. The clock runs out.
I lost.
I lost my first ever game to a girl. Named Kamryn. Who’s 15.
I think I died a little.
“Play again?” she asks.
“Hell yeah!” I shout.

We start up again, and I ask, “So, you make brownies? How does that help your performance?”
“I think it’s because they make me happy and calm. When you’re all riled up you do worse”, Kamryn explains.
“Now I want brownies”, I say to myself, but it goes through my headset.
“I have extras, maybe I can get them to you. Where do you live?”
“California. LA, actually”, I said, “24 East Maple Road. You live around there?”
“I actually do, right up the road, actually. Weird, I would think I’d see you around.”
“I don’t come outside often. Usually for school. You go to school, right?”
She laughs, “Yes I do, but I’m home schooled. I’ll be right over. I’ll call forfeit.”
She forfeits, and then about 10 minutes later, the doorbell rings.
I change t-shirts very quick and head over to the door. I open it to find a thin teenage girl, with long brown hair and a flawless face. Tube top, jean shorts, beautiful. “Uh, hey”, I say. I look pathetic next to her. Half messy tee, long pajama pants, messy hair. “Hi”, she says. “May I come in?”
“Sure, sure.”
I take her over to my room, which is actually kind of clean. “Here, I made them from my own recipe”, she said. She hands me a square tin. “Thanks”, I reply. “Wanna play Madden again? Or do you have to go? Or…”
“I’ll do whatever. I have ‘til 8.”
We play until she has to go. “So, Kamryn, are you…single?”
“I’m not, I have a long-distance boyfriend. I’m sorry.”
“No, it’s actually awesome. I didn’t want a relationship anyway.”
“Really? That’s a first in the male species. Every guy I talk to online always flirts.”
“No, I just like to focus on one thing. Which for me, is gaming”, I explain.
“I can see”, she laughs, “Well, we should hang out again soon. Whatcha up to tomorrow?”
“Nothing, like normal. Come over ‘round…4?”

“Perfect! See you then”, she said. She leaves, and all I can think is how I just gained my first friend.
