Why Religion? In the first instance we look to the work of Henri Bergson, the author of:  "The Two Sources of Morality and Religion."Bergson tells us that religion and spirituality are distinct ideas and actualities.Spirituality is the real thing, says Bergson.Spirituality leads us toward truth, justice, love, inner peace, and knowledge.   If spirituality is the freight carried on a freight car, while religion is the train.   Religion carries spirituality through history. Religion   has symbols, rituals, sacraments, and rules; and these are meant to brings a religious adherent to spirituality.Philosophy can also bring us to spirituality, and, religion can teach philosophy. Thus,  Bernard Lonergan tells us that we can find spirituality through the Transcendental Precepts:  Be attentive, be intelligent, be reasonable, and be reflective.  Religion can also teach Ethics, with ethical principles such as:  Reciprocity, Proportionality, Utility, and  Equity, as Fejfar tells us.So, let us not be too down on religion, when it is religion that often brings us to spirituality and ethics.
