When she was 17, she ran away from home. She moves to a town in Minnesota, and meets Matt, who steals her heart.

As Christmas comes around, Matt learns he's going to move, so he makes their last week as memorable as possible until he can come back when he's 18.

I walked through main street in disgust. Christmas was definitely in the air. All the shops had little Santa decorations in the windows, the bakery smelled like gingerbread and cinnamon. The bookstore had Christmas books up front, and the local restaurant had waiters and waitresses dressed up as elves.

Christmas had never been a good memory for me. My parents hated me, and were abusive and “Santa” somehow forgot to stop at my house every year. When all the other kids brought in their toys for show and tell, I brought in the same toy every year. A little teddy bear.

Last year, I had left my parents' house. I never said a word to them, and pretended I was 18, although, I was turning 18 next year. I moved to a little town in Minnesota, and rented a house from an old couple, who willingly let me stay there. In Minnesota, it snows until all you can see is white. That's what I wanted. Just to feel blank. But then, I met Matt.

He lived down the block from me. When I moved in, he offered to help me unpack. And we instantly connected. Matt and I were an on and off couple, he dated other girls while I stood on the sideline, but he always came back to my house a random day, telling me he was sick of the girl. Thankfully, for Christmas, we were together.

I finally had someone to spend the holiday with, and could try to make it as cheerful as possible. I walked towards home. The frosty air was making me shiver, and I could feel my face turning pink. Once I reached my block, I carefully watched the sidewalk for ice. After almost falling off my porch, I reached the door. I turned to the key in the door, and entered.

Matt sat on the couch, watching TV. He smiled when I walked in, and turned off the TV.

“Hi Matt. What are you doing here?” I asked. It seemed as if something was on his mind.

“Maybe you should sit down,” he told me. I listened, pulling off my coat, and pulling off my boots. I sat down on the couch and he sat on the table in front of me. He looked, sad, if not angry.

“What's going on Matt?” I asked. I was getting concerned.

“I have to tell you something. Something important,” he started. I nodded for him to go on.

“My- my parents have been talking lately. They say that, well, they want to- to move.”

My heart dropped. What? Move? This couldn't be happening! Matt can't move! He's the only good thing that's happened to me.

“Is it for certain? Can you stay back?” I asked. I was prepared to stay strong and fight for him.

“Well, they say since I'm only 17, I can't stay here. Later next year, when I turn 18, they'll let me come back. I don't want to, but I have no choice,” he explained.

I let a tear drop slide down my cheek. He rubbed it away, and picked me up. He brought me to my room, and told me he'd be back tomorrow. And then he kissed me on the cheek, and left.

What a day. I decided to actually sleep, and woke up to Matt walking into my bedroom, and pulling off my covers.

“Wake up! We've got a long day!” he shouted. I sat up, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes.

“What are we doing?” I asked, standing up. He pulled me to my closet.

“We have a week left together. So I decided we are going to make it an awesome week!” he shouted cheerfully. I grabbed an outfit from my closet, and went to the bathroom to get ready.

Once I was dressed, I was greeted by a breakfast of pancakes shaped like hearts. I ate hungrily, and got up.

Surprisingly, I was picked up by Matt, and he carried me bridal style towards his truck. He slid me into the passenger seat, and he ran to the driver's side. We drove to a place where we were greeted by a sign that said: “Vinanick Tree Farms! Pick Your Tree!”

“No way! I told you I didn't want a tree this year!” I shouted at him.

“Oh please! Who doesn't want a tree?” he asked out loud.

“Me!” I shouted, slapping him playfully on the shoulder.

He laughed, and kissed me on the cheek,“Too bad.”

After parking the truck, getting out and helping me out, Matt led me to a little house inside the farm. He knocked on the door, and a jolly short man came out. He saw Matt, and grinned even wider.

“Matthew! I've been waiting for you! How's your mom?” he asked, hugging Matt.

“She's great! How have you been here alone grandad?” he asked, as Matt's grandad led us inside. We got to a tiny kitchen, and sat down at a table.

“Oh don't you worry about me! Now what's this talk about you moving? And who's this lovely lady?” he asked, gesturing towards me.

“This is my girlfriend Emily. We're here to pick out a tree. And yes, mom, dad, and I are moving,” he said looking at me for a moment. My expression didn't change though. That thought was not going to get me down today.

“Oh really. We'll let's head out and pick a tree. What size are you looking for Ms. Emily?” he asked me.

“Umm I think-” I started.

“We'll have the biggest one you can find,” Matt said, grinning at me when my jaw dropped.

“Alrighty then,” Matt's grandad stated, leading us outside to an area of cut down trees. Matt's grandad seemed to know where to go, and lead us there. On the way, Matt grabbed my hand, and we walked to the area. Giant trees stood before us, some had to be 15 ft. tall. There was no way that would fit in my small place.

“Could you get us a 10 footer?” Matt asked him.

His grandpa pointed to a tree, and Matt smiled. He squeezed my hand.

“We'll take it,” he said. Matt and his grandpa dragged it to the truck, and Matt handed him a hundred dollar bill. Where did he get that?

Oh no, no, no! You give me twenty, and I'll be ok,” his grandad said. Matt shook his head.

No, I have to pay you the cost,” he said, pushing the bill toward him.

No! Give me twenty! I insist!” his grandpa shouted.

Matt sighed, and pulled out his wallet, handing him a twenty. His grandpa looked satisfied, and hugged Matt. He grinned at me, and and waved. I got into the truck, and Matt got in on the other side. He opened the window as the truck started, and screamed,“I mailing you the rest of the money!” and sped away.

Matt, I'm going to kill you!” I yelled playfully at him. He looked at me confused.

What did I do now?” he asked.

You're spending way too much money on me!” I shouted.

Oh there's always enough money for you!” he said happily, and hugged me. I tried to push him away.

Keep you eyes on the road! Get off me!” I screamed. He laughed, and passionately kissed me before looking back at the road. I smiled. I loved him. How could I not? He was all I ever wanted.

We finally turned down a familiar road. Main Street. He drove down the block and parked in front of my house. We dragged the tree in, to find a bunch of boxes stacked on each other.

What the hell is all of this?” I asked bewildered.

Those, would be ornaments for our new tree,” he said, smiling. I looked at him confused.

How did you get them here?” I asked him. How many surprises would I get today?

I had a few friends drop them off,” he told me, setting up the tree, and pulling the strings off. The tree's branches fanned out, and Matt went off to open the boxes.

There were ornaments with shapes of all kinds, and tinsel stuffed inside the boxes. I pulled some tinsel out, and tried to put it around the tree. Everytime I put it on, it fell to the floor.

Matt came behind me, and held my hands to show me how to do it right. I smiled, and let his hands guide me. He placed it on the tree, and twisted me around. Our lips met, and we kissed for what felt like hours. While keeping our lips together, he picked my legs up, and carried me to my bedroom. He set me on my bed, and left the room.

He came back with a duffel bag.

You're staying?” I asked. He set the bag down on my bed.

Of course I am,” he said, walking to my bathroom. I took this time to change into some shorts and a tank top. He came back out wearing nothing but boxers. I wanted to scream, but wasn't about to look like a little girl.

I got under the covers, and he got on my bed. I turned and he wrapped his arms around me. I wanted to stay like this forever.

Goodnight Emily,” he whispered in my ear. In a matter of seconds, I was drifting off, and was in a deep slumber.

* * * * * * * *

Matt ended up staying every night. Tuesday, we finished decorating the tree. Wednesday we went ice skating, and ended the night with a nice fancy dinner. Thursday, Matt rented a bunch of movies, and we cuddled all day. Friday, we went shopping, and Matt insisted I try on every single outfit, and bought me at least half of them. I was steaming, but he was absolutely defiant, and wouldn't let me put anything away.

Saturday, I was brought to a winter festival, and we walked around discovering little Christmas displays, and eating all kinds of foods. Sunday, was the worst day.

I awoke to find Matt packing his duffel bag. I knew today would be cut short. I stood up and got dressed. After I had dressed warmly, he grabbed my hand, and led me outside.

Where are we going?” I asked him as we walked towards the end of the block.

You'll see,” he whispered as we walked away from my home. He led me to a forest area with a large, mossy log. He sat me down, and pulled out a box. Oh crap! He was not about to propose to me!

He opened the box and pulled out a necklace. It was a golden necklace. They were little diamonds on it, and my jaw dropped. I couldn't believe it.

Matt it- it's beautiful!” I shouted. I hugged him, and kissed him on the cheek. He smiled, and pulled it out of the box.

Then, Matt put it on my neck. He looked at me grinning happily.

A beautiful necklace for an even beautifuler girl,” he stated. I hugged him again, and we walked back to his house. A moving van was in front of it, and his parents were carrying boxes with the moving crew.

Matthew! Get over here and help your father, would you?” his dad barked. Matt ran over, and grabbed some boxes.

The van was loaded in a half hour, with help from me. Matt's parents were staring at the house, and then they turned to the van.

Let's go Matthew,” Matt's mom commanded.

I'll only be a minute,” Matt said to them as they got into the van. He was focused on me.

Emily. I love you. I will be back as soon as my birthday comes. I promise,” he said kissing me. I kissed back, but wanted to cry. Christmas was in a week. Why did he have to leave now?

He finally pulled away, and went to the van. He got in, and stared through the window as his dad started the car, and pulled away from the curb. I blew him a kiss before the car disappeared down the corner.

I turned around, and sat on the porch steps. I stayed there until the sun had gone down.

I walked home in the light of the moon. The night was chilly, and dark. I walked inside, and fell to the ground, right in front of the tree. I fell asleep sobbing. Matt was going to be gone for at least 6 months.

The next day, I woke up and sat on my couch. I sat there staring at the tree. I spent half of the day staring at it, and then, went to sleep. The next day, I woke up feeling sick. I hadn't eaten in days, but I was not hungry.

At about 8 a.m. there was a knock at the door. I sulked over to it, and a perky girl walked in.

Hello Emily!” she shouted, coming inside and shaking the snow off of her boots.

Who are you?” I asked as she took off her coat.

I'm Izzy! Matt sent me to take care of you. He thought you'd need me for a while. I guess he was right,” she said, just as my stomach growled.

She went to the kitchen, and began cooking. I let her do what she wanted, and she had made a large breakfast for me in an hour. I ate it happily. She wasn't Matt, but she was a good cook.

She played Christmas music and danced around the house, doing my laundry, cooking for me, and cleaning. All I had to do was sleep and eat. The rest of the time I lounged around.

The day before Christmas Eve, Izzy rushed in with some groceries.

Emily, can I ask you a question?” she inquired, as I sat in front of the tree.

Yes?” I asked.

Would you mind if I went home tomorrow and on Christmas, so I could be with my family? I'll leave you food and everything. You'll just have to heat it up,” she remarked.

That's perfectly fine. You have a nice time,” I told her. She grinned and thanked me.

The day went by quickly. Izzy left and made sure I knew where all the meals for the next two days were.

I had slept through the night peacefully, and I woke up at noon. I went to the living room, and turned on the stereo. I played love songs. It was Christmas Eve, and I was alone. I laid a blanket in front of the tree, and just laid there listening to the music. After hours, I looked at the clock. It was 5:30. It was dark out.

Children would be anticipating Santa Claus coming right now. Everyone besides me was probably happy in this town, laughing with their friends and family.

Hayley William's voice began to blare through the speakers.

Darling you are the only exception.

The words replayed in my head until the song ended. I closed my eyes. Katy Perry's Teenage Dream began playing, and I just listened until I had gone through many songs.

Once I looked through the clock it was 9:00. It was dark out, and I would stay here for the next 2 days. I was lying there quietly, and then the love songs changed to some Christmas radio channel.

Mariah Carey's “All I Want For Christmas Is You” started playing. Ugh!

Hey!” I shouted. I looked up, and a voice shushed me.

Lie back down, and shut your eyes,” a deep voice said. Holy crap! I was so scared right now. This was obviously a guy on a hunt for DEATH. I lied there freaking out.

This guy came to the blanket, and crawled on top of me. I felt a rose trace past my nose. Oh my god! A rapist is on top of me right now! This is baaaaad!

Then, his lips touched mine, and I knew that instant, it was Matt. I opened my eyes, and saw his familiar face.

I just want you for my own

More than you could ever know

Make my wish come true

All I want for Christmas is you

You baby

“What are you doing back here?” I asked once he had stopped kissing me.

“I came for you,” he said, kissing me once more.

I rubbed my hands through his soft hair, and just felt absolutely happy. Christmas was going to be alright this year. I had Matt back. I was happy. I almost felt complete. My parents didn't matter anymore. Nothing mattered at this moment.

'Cause I just want you here tonight

Holdin' on to me so tight

What more can I do?

Baby all I want for Christmas is you

You

Matt and I stayed there the rest of the night. We talked until I had drifted off. For once in my life, my abusive past didn't sneak up and try to come back. My Christmas wish had come true. I had all I ever needed.
