My parents abandoned me when i was a baby. The orphanage let me go as soon as I was old enough to take care of mysef. Everyone has shunned me. When I walk oast someone in the street they walk in a wide arc around me . I am ugly. The previous generation made everyone beautiful and immortal. If eveeryone was the same skin colour, same eye colour and same height would wars ever be fought over race? And if everyone was immortal and sterile would people lives be ruined with havingchildren too young? So now everyone is the same. geneticaly engineered not to disobey. Not to think differently. Everyone goes to school, graduates and before university get a job chosen for them and go to the uniersity accordingly.

I on the other hand am not beautiful or clever. In a world where everyone is black, I am white. Where everyone has flawless skin I have spots. I look like a european in the 21st century. Unpredictable and different. Under law I have to attend school. I have to sit through history, where we are taught how, many years ago. The Europeans slaved Africanss. How they used nucear weapons. And we were taught how the africans were noble, gracious. they fought without blood. They were the makers of diamonds and riches beyond compare. Whenever someone says something bad about the Europeans everyone looks at me. I have to sit at the front of the class so I don't do anything dangerous. In biology they say that before we were pretty and immortal there was a part of our brain that controlled bad emotions. When we were changed that part was taken out.

I live in a small apartment guarded at all times by guards. I am treated with mistrust and suspicion. In our city there is one other anomaly. His name is Luc but we are forbidden from asociating with each other in case we try to raise a rebellion. Luc is my age. I have seen him around school,  but because we are both under heavy guard we have no way to talk to each other.

Today is a very inportant day. The president is making a speech. The president only makes speeches occasionaly and whenever he does it is televised very widely. Today is mufti day so we can wear whatever we want. Because i am an ugly i only have acsess to very simple clothes. I choose on a new length yellow dress.. It has a halterneck and shows of my shoulders very nicely. I know compared to every one I am ugly but I look a lot like one of those european models in the magazines. Today is one of those rare times when i can spend the day without people following me. There is a disco going on. Just for kids the adults have there own party in another building. I am staning near the door when someone pulls me out and puts their hands over my mouth. I try to scream but my sounds are muffled. They lead me to a shed in the very corner of the school. Eventually i bite his hand. He jerks his hand away and grips it and yowls out. "What is wrong with you?" he says. I haven't been concentrating so I haven't realized who I am talking to. "Luc?"

"Yeh".

"What are we doing here?"

"The president is passing a new law. From now on evey anomaly will be executed. He has already set our execution date. We will be dead in a week."

"What", I cannot believe this. Murder has never happened for over a century.#

"Tommorrow night your guards will seize you and murder you in front of everyone."

"What are you going to do".

"We are going to leave, right now".
