I Turned In My Dissertation Today

Many moons ago, a decade or more
I got this idea in my head
I would be a Dr, not an MD
Put some initials by my name

It was not taken lightly
Although I don't think I knew what it would mean
The years of study
The ups, the downs
The people, the stress
The many different stages
And deadlines to meet

It sits on my desk
All prettily done and printed out
The formatting perfect
Every dot and page number in its place
A thing of beauty
A thing so much larger than the sum of its parts

The ink is stuffed with life
Every sentence pored over
I can see every giddy day
Every moment filled with frustration
Exhilaration
Boredom
Sitting between the lines
Wrapped up in that tiny 'g'
Unfurling as my fingers slide between the pages

What does it mean?
When did I get here?
What will it feel like to leave this place,
After so many years of struggle and happiness?
What new goal can I find,
To sate the planner within me?

I feel strange.
I feel hopeful.
I look forward but also back.
I am proud.
I turned in my dissertation today.
