Prologue-Home
The television blared from inside the living room, filling the house with comfortable noise, better than shouting anyway. Rosalie let the door close behind her with a soft click as she crossed the dimly lit hallway. She tried her hardest not to be heard as she climbed the stairs, she didn’t need an episode with nick, not after the appalling day she’d had, she just wanted her iPod and sleep. But the stairs creaked threateningly under her feet. Rosalie cringed, a hearing a thunderous voice yell out “ROSE! I want a word with you. You little good for nothing!”
Rosalie rolled her eyes and padded into the living room, her stomach churning. Sitting in a chair opposite the small television was her step-dad Mick, whom she hated with all her heart, sitting there like a huge lazy baboon. She trembled and looked him straight in his dark eyes.
“Well?” he demanded, his eyes glinting dangerously. “Where’ve you been? Your an hour late and you haven’t started Fee’s dinner.”
Rosalie glared at him, “I had dancing with Gina, I always do on a Thursday.” She snapped icily, pushing her soft brown hair out of her face and continuing to stare at the man she hated most in the world.
“In that case, you’re banned from dancing until you learn to come home on time, and you can put Fee’s tea on now to help me out!” Mick spat out, showering her with saliva. Rosalie backed away, disgusted and fought the sudden urge to hit someone. She stalked away, slamming the door behind her, realising that her eyes were full of tears.
It was so unfair; she missed her dad ever so much! Her little sister, Fee, called to her from the stairs. “When’s tea ready Ro?”
Rosalie smiled wearily and scooped up her tiny sister and carried her down the stairs, trying not to crush her pretty checked frock and red beret, the school uniform from the posh, private infant’s school she attended. They walked into the kitchen and Rosalie set Fee down on the counter looking at her, marvelling at her perfect button nose, soft blonde curls and grey-green eyes. “Now sous-chef Sophie, what delicacy are we going to be cooking up tonight?” She asked in her best French accent.
Fee giggled delightedly and thought for a moment. “I know!” she yelled “Beans on toast!”
Rosalie grinned happily and began banging around the kitchen, as Fee told her about the yellow bike she’d learned to ride, her best friend Faye’s new puppy, Benny Thompson’s birthday party and the exact colour of dress she just had to have. All trivial, unimportant little things, but Rosalie nodded and smiled while she put toast under the grill and microwaved some beans.
“Rose, I want that new dress, now!” Fee complained stamping her tiny feet against the drawers.. Rosalie caught hold of them and held them fast.
“If you eat you tea up for me and clean your plate, then I might see about taking you into town tonight and go dress shopping.” Rosalie promised.
Fee clapped her hands together and jumped off the counter with a beautiful sunny smile on her chubby face. She looked like an angel. Just then Mick walked in smelling faintly of beer and cigarettes. Rosalie knew what was coming; she moved away but was on the floor before she could react. She sat up feeling the blood on her face. She knew in her heart that she couldn’t stay here, it wasn’t safe. She had to get out right now! So, grabbing her mobile she phoned Lizzie’s number with shaking hands, almost crying.
Lizzie answered on the third ring. “Rosie, what’s up?”
“I’m coming to London to stay with you and Erin, I can’t say here!”
Lizzie sounded panicky. “Ro you can’t come now, your mum needs you!”
I’m not staying!! I won’t!!”
“OK, I’ll pick you up from Waterloo, take care. See you soon.”
Rosalie ran upstairs and grabbed her overnight back which was already packed for such an event. She could feel her eyes throbbing painfully; she’d have a black eye in the morning. As she dragged her case downstairs she saw Fee standing in the hall like a helpless kitten staring up at her, “Don’t leave, please don’t!” she begged clinging to her like a little monkey.
Rosalie bent down until her eyes were on level with Fee’s and said, “I have to go darling, to stay with cousin Lizzie for a while. I’ll miss you tones, I love you.”
“Will you write?” Fee asked tearfully.
Rosalie held Fee close to her and said “Of course, I’ll phone every day too.” With that she marched out the front door and the last thing she saw was Fee’s beautiful face peering up at her. She couldn’t hold back tears and she was on the street totally alone.
