to a friend who changed.

You were different.

You went through life confident.

You were who I used to be,

A sort of ghost of past-life's me.

You came to high school

sure you could belong

You quickly saw what was cool

and that maybe you thought wrong.

Maybe this was a place

where status depended on race.

Where fashion was of most importance

and boys bragged about competence.

Maybe to be you was wrong;

You knew not the words to Conformist Song.

Still, you stuck it out, fought tooth and nail.

Throwing right against wrong, you couldn't fail.

Yet in the end, when all was said and done,

You let go of yourself...came undone.

You forgot who you wanted to be.

You became just like the rest. Just
