The bottle banged against the tabletop, a harsh throw to contrast the delicateness that was within. Out from within the swirling liquid a little figure stared, face pressed up against the purple bottle.

“One day,” she muttered to herself. “One day she’ll know.” She was watching the girl, a young one by the name of Selena, who was carelessly going about her day, oblivious to the fairy in her perfume bottle.

The fairy leaned back as the girl left the room, sinking into the liquid. If the girl broke the bottle she would be granted a wish by the fairy, but when one didn’t know what good awaited a broken bottle, then one would rather it remain uncracked. The bottle would only break by accident, and the fairy knew it. Selena was, however, a fairly careless girl, tossing her things as if she didn’t mind if they break. Each time the bottle was picked up, the fairy willed it to break, so she could be free and grant her unknowing friend the wish.

The fairy swam around the bottle, creating bubbles as her hands touched the sides. She longed to be free, so then she could have wings and fly. Only when she was free could she gain her wings.

The perfume bottle was would soon be empty. The fairy shuddered at the thought. She would die if the bottle wasn’t broken before all the perfume was used up.

The girl re-entered the room, on the phone. Despite being in glass, the fairy could hear every word clearly.

“Oh Macy you should try my perfume one day, it smells so good.”

The fairy smiled, knowing that the smell was because of her.

“I’m going to buy a new one when this is used up, it’s just enchanting, it’s mesmerising really.”

The fairy flicked her dark wet hand behind her with a casual hand, smiling with pride.

“Macy of course I’ll be careful with the bottle. This is one thing I’m not going to break.”

The fairy’s smile fell. The girl who was so careless had every intention of being careful with the one thing she should break.

“Okay, bye Macy.” Selena clicked off the phone, throwing it carelessly onto her table.

The fairy saw it, the phone swinging through the air, catapulting straight towards her.

Selena saw the bottle pushed, slipping over the sides of the table, falling, uncatchable, onto the ground.

It cracked.

Perfume seeped across the floor, glass lying in shatters.

Selena gasped, but it wasn’t the broken bottle she was gasping at. It was the small figure, in a long flowing purple dress, floating before her.

The fairy stared at the girl, new wings moving so fast in joy they could barely be seen.

“Hello,” the fairy said.

“Hello,” Selena said nervously. She wasn’t sure if it was a joke, or a trick design in the bottle.

“Thank you for releasing me, for that you gain a wish.”

“A wish?”

“I was stuck in your perfume bottle, and for breaking me out of it, you may have one wish.”

Selena smiled, she liked very much the idea of a wish. She still wasn’t sure about what was happening, but even if it was a joke, it couldn’t harm her to make a wish. But what did she want?

“I wish for a new bottle of perfume.”

“Granted.” And the fairy flew over to her desk, creating an array of light, forcing Selena to close her eyes.

When she opened them, there it sat, a bottle of perfume on her desk just where she had left it, and no fairy in sight.

“Perhaps I imagined it,” she said. And she picked up the full bottle, spraying it delicately, whilst the small fairy watched, and smiled in delight.
