Background

Family History: Lydia Cartwright never expected to have a child. She had been living on her own for quite a few years, traveling the world and meeting many new people. She only thought about herself and her own happiness, so when she discovered she was pregnant, Lydia realized she needed to do something quick.

She found a job as a seamstress and kept a stable home. Lydia didn’t know who the father was, nor did she really care. Her life was how she wanted it to be and she didn’t need anyone’s help. She had dreamed as a little girl about having a baby and now she was getting one without the hassle of getting married.

Personal History: Mary has no father. Well, she does, but she has no idea who he is. From the time she was young, she knew that there was something missing in her home life, but it never really bothered her much. Her mother told her various stories about her past and birth, all are probably not true.

Mary moved often as a child, so she learned to make friends quickly. She moved all over England and parts of Wales. When they moved to Brittany off the coast of France, she met a boy living next door named Vincent. They, both being only children became extremely close and spent every waking moment together.

Her mother owns a robe shop. She fitted and altered robes for many walks of life. Mary met hundreds of interesting people growing up. She spent a lot of time, when not with Vincent, there with her mother and the robes. It wasn’t the clothes that interested her, but the people who wore them. She liked to dream about what their lives must be like and what it would be like to be them.

Right before she turned eleven, her mother suddenly packed everything up and moved to London. Mary didn’t get to say good bye to Vincent, but saw him almost a year later at school. Mary kept her second language as a secret code to irritate her mother and others who couldn’t speak French.

Personality: Because Mary wasn’t ever given straight answers as a child, she learned that it wasn’t necessary to always tell the truth. When life wasn’t as interesting or easily explained as she would like, Mary would make something up. She is extremely loving and loyal to those she loves and doesn’t think that she is hurting anyone with her stories. Mary wants all the beautiful things in life, like the people she saw in her mother’s shop. Her imagination is vast and she can wish something into beauty.
