I was so young

At first I think I didn't understand

Mommy told me "he won't be back"

I tried to pretend I knew what she meant

I stare at the coffin from the back of the room

Crossword puzzles I clutch in my lap

"Mommy, mommy why's he lying in the box

Why doesn't he stand? Is he taking a nap?"

My guardian angel wasn't a holy man

His halo was dented

His wings couldn't last

But he pushed on

Through the cold, hard years

Michigan storms rage

Mom kneels in tears

Staind sings the funeral hymn

A melody I know all too well

A red bandana blows in the wind

I wonder vaguely

Heaven or Hell?

Charlie

Why did you leave?

I never even got a change to meet you

Charlie

Don't leave me now

Redeem yourself

Look down on me

Safe in the clouds

Mommy has a necklace

She keeps on top of the T.V.

I'm not allowed to touch it.

"Mommy what could that be?"

I sit on the couch and stare at it for hours

It twinkles in the light reflected from the street

"Mommy, mommy what's in the blue box?"

"Honey don't you remember your Uncle Charlie?"

My guardian angel wasn't a holy man

His halo was dented

His wings couldn't last

But he pushed on

Through the cold hard years

Michigan storms rage

Mom sits in tears

Uncle Kracker sings the funeral hymn

A melody I know all too well

A red bandana blows in the wind

I wonder vaguely

Heaven or Hell?

Charlie

Why did you leave?

I never even got a chance to meet you

Charlie

Don't leave me now

Redeem yourself

Look down on me

Safe in the clouds

The wind brushes past my back

My legs swing me into the air

I stare into the heavens and pretend I see your eyes

My lips part and I hope you can hear

"My guardian angel wasn't a holy man

His halo was dented

His wings wouldn't last

But he pushed on through the cold hard years

Michigan storms rage

Mom lays in tears

Charlie

Why did you leave?

I never even got a chance to meet you.

And you're gone

And you're gone.

Please come back home."
