MYSTERY SHIP

By Art Lefkowitz

Henry stops at the Ye Olde Coffee Shoppee on his way to work. This town has a lot of ‘Ye Olde’ stores; Ye Olde Tavern, Ye Olde Jewelers’ and so on.

The town of Port Jefferson lies on the north shore of Long Island, New York. It is a quaint little town that is dotted with antique shops and nautical-themed restaurants. Old, white-haired men with leathery skin, wearing captain hats and jackets can be seen strolling on the streets near the waterfront.

The whole town slopes toward Long Island Sound. A hundred years ago, Port Jefferson was a busy seaport and whaling center, where sailors drank and fought in run-down bars.  The town is now a far gentler and peaceful place.

Most of the boating enthusiasts gather at the Port Jefferson Yacht Club after church on Sunday afternoon to play cards, drink and tell lies of their adventures at sea. Most of these old captains sold their boats a long time ago, but some of these retirees dunk their captain hats into the ocean so that the gold buttons on their hats will be covered with a green tarnish to imply they are still active sailors.

Every summer, Henry, a pre-med student, works on the dock at the club. Henry fills the ships with gas, water, ice and any supplies they might need.

One day, Henry is filling the gas tank of a beautiful forty-two foot yacht. Henry tells the captain, “This is an awesome boat.”

“Thank you,” the captain replies.

“Are you a doctor?” Henry asks.

“No”

“Who named this boat?” Henry asks.

“Well I just bought it a few months ago. As I recall he was a doctor,” the captain replies.

“Do you know what the name of this ship means?” Henry asks.

“Well, I think it is the name of a Polynesian or Tahitian Island”

Actually, Tinea cruris is a fungus that grows on the testicles,” Henry replies, laughing.
