JEWS

The platforms heaved

With silent, frightened figures,

Young, old, men, women, children,

Huddled beside their paltry belongings

Hastily thrown together,

Personal things, cherished treasures,

Packed in battered cardboard suitcases.

Hardly anyone moved,

Not even the wide-eyed children.

Strangers and friends,

Thrown together in confusion.

But all had one thing in common:

They were Jews.

A sense of foreboding filled them

Though they knew not why.

Yet instinctively they understood

This was the beginning of the end,

The start of a new life filled with hopelessness

From which few would return.

In the middle of the crowd

An old woman shuffled, newly widowed,

Rheumy eyes filled with unshed tears,

Not caring any more if she lived or died,

Yet fearful of what was to come.

Then in the gloom of the night,

Puffing and hissing like some evil serpent

Loomed a monstrous engine

Towing in its wake cattle trucks,

Empty and windowless.

Silence was shattered as it clanked to a halt

And the SS officer barked his orders

To the surly, grim-faced soldiers,

“Get them on board!  Schnell!  Schnell!”

In the jostling mêlée people stumbled,

Were crushed, loved ones separated.

Toddlers screamed for their mothers

But their pitiful cries went unheard

Till finally every last one was inside,

Crammed tight, no room to move.

Behind them lay their past

Scattered on the platforms in battered cardboard cases,

The memories and treasures

They’d been forced to abandon,

A poignant reminder of a persecuted people.

The hissing monster slid out of the station

And disappeared into the murky night.

All that remained was

Silence.
