I see you.

You have not seen me, yet. I wait for you out of sight, knowing you will come to me soon. When you locked the door last night, I smiled. A closed window will not prevent my arrival. Darkness and I dance together; the night has seduced me with all its charms and secrets.

It is in these times that you are the most secure. Snuggled in your warm house, an alarm system beeping softly in the velvet blackness, with a blanket draped over your feet-it is then you do not fear me. But you should.

I am always near, and I am always

watching you.

Can you hear me?

I whisper in your dreams. A quiet hiss in your ears; a gentle breath caressing the back of your neck. You shake your head.

you say, it is only the house settling--the whine of the wind in the night, but you are wrong. Sometimes you search the room. You flick the light on with a gasp, eyes jumping from shadowy corners to a yawning closet. You do not see me, but

I see you.

Do you feel me?

I think you do. That icy touch sweeping down your spine-the feathery touch that makes you spin around, eyes hunting...hunting-yes, that is me. I have seen you shudder when I brushed against you.

You cringe so easily. Yes, you feel me. I know you do.

How long must I wait?

I will not linger forever. There is so much more for me to do. Your friend there, crossing the street, her heels clicking bravely on the pavement, yes she will do as well. Or that one, his watch gleaming in the streetlight’s puddle of gold-I must do this game, this balance with him as well.

I hear you whistling, but it will not help. You turn on the light in the house, but I remain. You have walked past me, but you do not see me. I know this; I am waiting.

Drive away in your car. Walk down the street. Call a friend. It does not matter. I will find you. You cannot hide from me, because

I can see you.

Try to escape from me. It makes the chase enjoyable. Do as you like for now. You will come to me soon. There is no more delay. You belong to me now; you will not see the morning this time.

Do you know this?

I think you do. That is why you carefully check the locks again, pulling the shades closed on the windows. You think this will stop me? It is clear you do not know me as you ought, but
you will.

I am inescapable. No matter who they may be, all will come to me someday. Do you believe this? It matters little if you do or not. I am here…I am waiting.

I see you
