Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. (C. S. Lewis)

Serpentine.

Your love is serpentine.

It crawls through darkness,

Sleeps in shadow.

Hidden and unspoken

Until the opportune moment;

Your love strikes like a serpent.

No act of innocence can fool me.

Words dripping from a viper’s maw

Are exacting,

Precise,

Deadly.

One moment we are strolling, aimless.

You, searching for an escape;

And I, unaware of your sentiments.

Another moment we are at odds with logic.

You, wondering how best to dismantle me;

And I, too afraid to look away.

Hypnotized.

I am hypnotized by your unfeeling gaze.

Still your love is serpentine,

Cold blooded by nature.

Your toxins destroy me from inside

And every time it makes me wonder

Why.
