This poem is about Cammy, my tortoiseshell cat that has gone with me through everything. When my boyfriend was still in Basic Training I had her to keep me company. She is always with me or outside.

Feline Friend

I have a friend,

One that I have had for about seven years,

Her name is Cammy.

When I first found her she was wild,

We later come to know each other.

I brought her inside where she stayed all the time.

Was not until later that I would learn what a feline friend I had made.

She was not the best cat at first,

In fact she used the house as her liter box.

She got put out quite a few times, but I always let her back in.

One night I got mad at her after she killed my fish,

I remember how I told my mom “she is the worst cat in the world”.

I remember closing my door so she could not come in my room,

I never knew what kind of friend I would have.

One night I got upset and started crying,

This cat I was once mad at began to lick my face.

At first I kept crying, but then it started to tickle,

And I began to laugh.

I was becoming friends with this cat.

Later on I noticed she would growl,

And growl at everything,

Even things that did not exist,

Everyone thought she was crazy, but I was falling in love with this Cat.

I had no clue why she would growl, but I found out later on.

One day I had made a decision,

One that broke my heart,

I decided to move to my dad’s house in Georgia, and was told to give Cammy away.

It broke my heart,

I finally was falling in love with my feline friend.

I moved to Georgia, but never had to give her away.

I came back home after I had found out,

That Georgia was no place for me.

I left all my friends, but I was happy to be home again.

Mom had taken care of Cammy, but when I got home it was like she never even knew me.

My heart was destroyed.

I did everything to try to pet her, but she would have no part of it.

Finally, I started feeding her and she started to come around again.

I gave her all the love she had missed out on,

And could not believe I had left my feline friend alone.

After all she did lick the tears from my eyes.

Years went by and the growling never stopped, but I felt protected.

I would bring her in the house at night,

And do what I needed to get done,

And if I heard her growl I would go check it out.

Her growling meant so much to me, and I felt protected.

Later on, I would find out that most of her hearing was gone, but I still loved my feline friend.

The older she is becoming, the grumpier she gets, but I still love my feline friend.

She follows me,

She plays when she feels like it,

And her favorite hobby is eating.

Over the years she has grown to be my best feline friend.

When I need some comfort I usually try to hold her, but she likes her space.

I understand her and she understand me,

Cammy is my best feline friend,

She makes me laugh,

Sometimes she makes me mad,

But all in all she is the best feline cat.
