Her breath was a sigh, perhaps of resign

But he'd hoped it was one of contentment.

She rolled her eyes, he was hardly surprised, but he feared it a sign of resentment.

He yearned for her eyes, so soft and wise,

but he feared what they'd see now should she look upon him.

He yearned for her kiss, the caress of her lips, but he knew now her mouth only scorned him.

He laid down his heart, all he had to offer, and hoped beyond hope she might take it.

His shame and his guilt, all wrapped up in silk, he laid at her feet so that she may forsake it.

Should she forsake him, although it would break him, he still only wanted to love her.

He admitted his wrongs, wrote sonnets and songs, but knew only she could forgive him.

For no words exist, here, there, nor betwixt, that could aptly convey all his sorrows.

All that he asked, though no right did he have, was that they two could have one more tomorrow.
