Can you know how they feel?
By: Joe Attanasio 2011
You hear the words, you know what has happened.
You see the faces, hear their voices.
It did not happen to you, it happened to them.
You want to say, “I know how you feel”.
But do you? Can you?
How can you know the shame a man may feel after molesting a child?
How do you know the guilt a coward feels after he runs and hides?
How would the shame and guilt feel after your car hit the kid on the bike and killed him?
How alone and unwanted would your friend feel, if you abandoned them when they really needed you and reached out for you so desperately?
How would you feel if you gambled your paycheck away, and your family suffered?
How would you feel if the ‘love of your life’ told you that you were worthless and walked out on you?
How would you feel if you had your unborn baby aborted?
How do you know what the drug addict or alcoholic feels when being unable to quit?
How do you know the feeling of loss when someone close to you dies?
How can you feel the fear and hopelessness of living for the very depressed?
How do you know what it would feel like if you were grotesquely disfigured from a fire or accident?
We can only guess how we would feel.
Maybe as we get older, experience more life, we could more easily imagine how we might feel.
We can never know how we would feel unless it happened to us!
