Why is it as we age, yesterdays seem near;
memories of spent youth vivid and so clear?
It wasn’t long ago I ran to chase the wind;
and felt as if that energy would never end.
Played from dawn to dusk; every kind of game;
with certainty, each day would bring the same.
A year never ending; a child’s idea of eternity;
Then we grow up and enter years of paternity.
A year still can linger; but not as long as times before;
Long before I’m ready; kids are heading out the door.
In retrospect, I watch as years go speeding by me;
Unlike the child, I now know; a year is not eternity.
