In the house where in my childhood spent;
many hours in happiness and was content
now sits empty; bereft of ones who made it so.
Memories all that’s left; from days long ago.
Smells of an old wood stove; a rooster’s crow;
waking me in the early morning from below.
In dormer room I slept in soft pillowed bed;
where aunts had before me laid their head.
Came grandmother’s call “To rise and shine”
I rushed to the kitchen on her food to dine.
Hot biscuits, eggs and bacon, fresh milk to drink;
weakened coffee she allowed me with a wink.
With grandfather to the old weathered stall;
to milk the cow; for horses some grain to haul.
Fed the chickens; slopped the hogs and returned;
so the cream by grandmother could be churned.
All these things are memories now held dear;
of summer breaks on farm in younger year.
Standing before the house now in sad decay;
thankful for the memories of a better day.
