I was a skeptic when it came to believing in spirits and ghosts; or any other thing that went bump in the night.
Those were tales meant to scare children around a camp fire. I am no longer a child; so why would I believe in such nonsense as that?
Bloody Bones, The Golden Arm, and Hollywood horror films were just that; make believe!
So, when I was told that the home I was about to purchase at a very good price; had been the scene of a murder; I hardly blinked. What did I care, as long it was the deal of the century.
I moved and settled into the house enjoying my good fortune. For the first couple of weeks all was quiet and I remembered the smirk I gave to the real estate lady when she asked if I were the least concerned about the house having ghosts.
“As long as they pay rent; the ghosts can roam about anywhere they like.”
It was late October when I began renovation work on a couple of rooms. I tore down a wall to open the space up and un-bricked a fireplace to convert it to gas logs.
It was about that time that I started hearing odd sounds in the house late at night. Cracking of floor boards; something being drug; nothing I couldn’t explain away as an old house settling or a limb rubbing against the roof in the wind.
But as the days passed, something strange began to happen. I would be sitting on the sofa watching television, when I would catch a glimpse of something move out of the corner of my eye. Just for a split second; not long enough to think it might be something for me to be concerned about really.
Soon after those “glimpses” occurred, I was awakened from my sleep one night by a noise I could not explain away. It was the sound of footsteps in my room. I lay in my bed, silent and still.
I opened my eyes; still not moving or wanting to provoke whoever or whatever was there.
There was a full moon on that Halloween Eve, and it cast an eerie blue light through my bedroom.
The footsteps were growing increasing closer; and louder. I looked toward my feet and what I saw caused my blood to run cold!
It was a silhouette of a man; but I could see right through him. It was as if he was made of vapor; with no real facial features that I could make out.
I no longer worried that I might move and cause him to react. My body was frozen with fright!
“What was he doing in my room? What did he want from me?” My mind was racing; trying to get a grip on sanity at that point.
The dark image moved from the foot of my bed and started floating toward the side I was lying on.
“Oh God! This can’t be happening”, I thought frantically. “I’m going to die tonight!”
He was now at the head of my bed; leaning down close to my face. I could smell rotting flesh as he whispered something in my ear.
“I’ve come to pay my rent.” He broke into hideous laughter. Laughing so loud it seemed to fill the entire house.
