My hope burns dimly; like an ember of dying flame;
that I might win your love; if only you say my name.
I watch you from afar; my heart aches in my chest;
I pray you notice; my gaze is different from the rest.
The longing in my eyes; must voice for me my care;
I cannot say aloud, “I love thee” I say it with a stare.
A subtle smile I offer, as you pass by my garden gate;
you smiled briefly back; I’m left to wonder at my fate.
Was your smile simply done of politeness and its sake;
dare I hope was meant to be a message for me to take?
Speak to me; give me reason to believe that I am right;
or else find new path to take on your walk each night.
When morrow evening came; I stood longingly by my gate;
he stopped this time, spoke my name; and sealed our fate.
